Seb and the dragons are great (3.5 stars)

Agathea Flamma is a snob. She’s also quite a brat. I tried very hard to give her the benefit of the doubt at the start of this book, since she’s high born and has probably never mixed much with hardworking commoners and all – but she kept on with her haughty thinking, believing Seb stupid and slow and dirty long past the point when she should have known better, and I wanted to push her off a dragon, quite frankly. Especially when she is exceptionally slow on the uptake herself at times.
Luckily for the sake of this book and my reading enjoyment, Seb is lovely. He’s a nice guy, he loves and appreciates his dragon, he works hard and he never gets too upset with all the awful, brattish kids around him who act more like they’re thirteen than eighteen. Which is a bit of a problem in this book. None of them act their age, so this is a book more suitable for Middle Grade readers than YA.
Beyond that this story is about what you’d expect with this description and this genre. There are dragons, there are people learning to ride them, there are some myths and legends, there is an ancient enemy, there are trials, social issues and of course a few enemies here and there. It’s all in here and it’s all fun and interesting, if a little irritating at times (Thea).
However, Seb and Thea are both lacking in back story and development. They don’t really change much throughout this book, except that they suddenly start working together at one point. It would have been lovely to have known a bit more about both their pasts in proper detail, rather than Thea pouting because her parents want to marry her off and Seb being a work horse to his alcoholic father. The plot is also pretty fast moving and there are some time jumps. I would have preferred a bit more detail on their actual training – away from the fighting and the first few flying lessons there isn’t any – and I’d have loved to have seen the reaction when they returned after helping another dragon during a trial.
So it’s not perfect or particularly unexpected. I would have loved a bit more from the dragons (but then I will always say this because I love dragons) and the world was a bit too generic for me (the north is simply called the north – but how far away is it? What’s the climate like here? What are the other countries like that don’t have dragons? And why don’t they have dragons too?). The characters have potential and the old enemy seems like one that will keep recurring long enough for a series. In all I enjoyed reading it, there was nothing about it I really didn’t like, but then there was nothing I loved either. I’d be happy enough to read more, if I happened upon the next book some day.

I wanted to like it and finish it but I could not

I wanted to like it and finish it but I could not. The main character is awful, I get it she is a snob but at some point you think she would start to be nice to Seb whom I liked. But no as soon as you think she is going to be kind to him she accuses him of being a drunk, and that is when I deleted the book and could not read anymore.
If someone wanted to be a dragon rider so badly you would think they'd like or try to bond with the dragon instead of mostly ignoring her and being embarrassed when Seb pays attention to the dragon. The writing was not bad and the plot had potential but, I just could not finish it and I tried.

Low Fantasy setting with Dragons

Overall it is a fun and quick read. You have two primary characters (Seb & Thea) and the point of view switches between them throughout the book. Which I feel was handled well and helped drive things forward giving you an attachment to both of them. Thea comes from a one of the oldest Noble families in the country, and though the character is annoying sometimes they are true to their background. Seb is your standard nice kid from a poor background troupe, the upside he actually sucks at things he should suck at (I loved how the author thought through a lot of the setting/plot to make believable). Besides Seb & Thea you have the female Dragon, who like other Dragons in this setting chooses 2 riders (Navigator & Protector) unlike most fantasy stories where they choose just one. The Dragon is not developed as much as Seb and Thea, though there is some minor character development for her.
During the course of the book Thea develops the most emotionally as her personality and world view come into question. Seb develops the most special power wise, as he has a once in a generation knack that allows him better communication with Dragons. It really does not come into play until near the end of the book, and actually slowly develops throughout the book so no surprises in it. There is no magic users/spells in this setting. In fact half a dozen magic items/artifacts are the only “magical” anything discussed in the story.
In the area of world building the overall setting appears to be a Late Middle Ages/Renaissance setting in an isolationist country Torvald (Which appears to be a City State similar to the Italian ones in history, i.e. a city plus the sounding county side) with Dragons as their “Air Force.” They do have a ground army, which is briefly mentioned and most likely viewed as an afterthought by the monarchy anyway. No other nations are mentioned though both the Northern and Southern regions outside the city state are briefly touched on. The current big bad comes from the Northern region. It is relatively good thing the country is isolationist as otherwise their neighbors would form a coalition against it out of fear as Torvald appears to have a monopoly on “willing” Dragons.
There are two other items I loved, and hits on something I mentioned above about how the author thought through the setting/plot to make it believable. The first is in the setting Torvald has been flying Dragons for centuries. So, they have an entire infrastructure built up around supporting Dragon flight. I loved that, as that is exactly what would happen. If your country had been flying Dragons you would have things like special signal communications for the flyers and aerial maps. All of which this setting has. The other thing is there is fight scene that actually played out realistically and not in a “Hollywood” fashion. Basically, you had Thea a teenage girl who is a trained swordsmen vs an Adult male who is an experienced swordsmen who has both a reach and strength advantage over Thea. This is not some fencing duel with rules, but an honest fight to the death. Therefore, the realistic result occurred, and not some contrived “Hollywood” feel good but unrealistic result.
Things for the next book I would love to see: Maybe see/meet the “Blue Dragon” Seb saw 5 years before he was chosen. I have a feeling that Dragon almost choose Seb too, but passed him as he was too young. More info on the neighboring countries. Some might of them might like Torvald, others scared of Torvald, and a few jealous of it… Even being isolationist is not going offset the “fear” that Torvald might become aggressive in the future.
