About the Author
Ever since backpacking around the Greek Islands as a student, Duncan has been fascinated by the Mediterranean and its apparently idyllic lifestyle. In an attempt to live it himself, he gave up a stuttering career in corporate journalism and moved to southern Italy in 1997. Two years later he transferred north to Rome, where he lives with his Italian wife and two young kids. These days Duncan spends much of his time running up and down the Italian peninsula, writing for Lonely Planet, but he's still drawn to the south, and heads to the Ionian Coast every summer to test the beaches and enjoy the superb Puglian food.

An excellent guide, with plenty of photos, and informative narratives on restaraurants, etc.
By Tom Brody
ROME by Garwood and Hole is a 367-page guidebook from the LONELY PLANET series. The book is printed on dull paper, not glossy paper. There are plenty of decent-sized photographs, most of them 1/3 page size. The rear cover contains a multi-colored fold-out map (gray, green, red, purple, blue, black). The map shows Rome's downtown area, and one can easily detect sites of interest, such as the star-shaped grounds of CASTEL SANT ANGELO, PIAZZA NAVONA, PANTHEON, CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS, COLOSSEUM, BASILICA DEI SANTI APOSTOLI, and SPANISH STEPS. The map shows the location of many piazzas, chiesas (Italian for church), basilicas, and museos. The flip side of the map shows metro lines that lead from the suburbs to central Rome.

The guidebook has nine chapters (pages 56-218): (1) Ancient Rome; (2) CENTRO STORICO; (3) TRIDENTE, TREVI & QUIRINALE; (4) MONTI, ESQUILINO, & SAN LORENZO; (5) SAN GIOVANNI to TESTACCIO; (6) Southern Rome; (7) TRASTEVERE & GIANICOLO; (8) Vatican City; and (9) VILLA BORHESE & Northern Rome. Rather than jump immediately into detailed topics, this guidebook gently introduces the reader to the subject of Rome by way of several introductory sections (pages 1-55), with titles such as, Rome's Top 13; What's New; Need to Know; Top Itineraries; If You Like; Month By Month; With Kids; Eating; Drinking and Night Life; Entertainment; and Shopping.

A small map on page 3 provides a "big picture" of the organization of Rome, and we learn that the districts of Rome are called, CENTRO STORICA (the subject of the large fold-out map); Vatican City; Villa Borghese and northern Rome; Tridente; Ancient Rome; Monti; San Giovanni; and Southern Rome.

Regarding the photographs, we see ancient Colosseum (a time-exposure done at night) (page 6); Palatino (made of tan-colored brick) (pae 7); Museo e Galleria Borghese (a symmetrical white building housing works by Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian), Pantheon (interior photo of a huge dome with dozens of tourists milling about under the dome); St. Peter's Basilica (resembles Grand Central Station in New York City, except without nervous New Yorkers running to catch their train) (page 10); and a half-dozen other photos showing Capitoline Museums (the world's oldest museum) (page 12); Roman Forum (page 13); a photo of one of Rome's piazzas; Viterbo (a former city center in medieval times); and another piazza (page 14). Later on in the book, we see sculptures of philosophers (page 25), St.Peter's Basilica (page 29); another photo of Colosseum (page 58); another photo of Palatino, showing a crumbling wall that reeals the interior of a dome within the crumbled building (page 60); another photo of Pantheon, where the facade of an ancient building reads: MAGRIPPAIFCOSTERTIVM (page 75).

Further regarding the photographs, we see a large photo of a sculpture of a horse residing in a pond, and a sculpture of a map with a snake twisted about his leg (pages 84-85); and Spanish Steps (at the head of the steps is a building with two towers, each tower capped with a blue dome) (page 105); photo of interior of Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, with its multi-colored dome and multi-colored walls (page 130); Appian Way (cobblestone street built in 312 BC) (page 160); Roman Catacombs (subterranean burial site) (pages 162-163); ceiling of Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (the ceiling has compartments shaped in octagons, plus-signs, L-shaped arrows, and the letter B) (page 171)., St.Peter's Basilica at night, showing a football-shaped dome with an illuminated crown on top of the dome (page 184), interior of Vatican Museum, showing display of sculptures of horses and other animals, and of human figures (page 189), and last but not least, five photographs of the Sistine Chapel (pages 195-199). Also shown, are photos of works by Bernini, Canova, Carravaggio, and Titian, at Musee e Galleria Borghese (pages 210-211). Later on in this book, we see photos of the interior of Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, showing a wall with an ornate relief sculpture flanking a large sculpture of a priest (page 285). There are also a couple of photographs of modern buildings (pages 286-287).

EXAMPLE OF ANECDOTES IN THE TEXT. Regarding the text, we read (page 79) about Piazza Pasquino, which is often called the "talking statue," because of the fact that, "in the 16th century, when dissent was forbidden, a tailor named Pasquino began sticking notes to the statue with satirical versus lampooning the church and aristocracy. Others joined in and soon there were talking stones all over town." (page 79) A couple of pages later, we read about another statue (Palazzo Spada) where there are conventional statues, but also a statue of a hedge (a lawn hedge), which was carved because the sculptor (Borromini) "didn't trust the gardeners to clip a real hedge precisely enough so he made one of stone" (page 81). As one can see, this guidebook contains intriguing and relevant anecdotes, which make the book as a whole, a lively read.

RESTAURANTS. In view of the fact that Rome was the center of the power and culture of the Western world, for so long, it is no surprise that this guidebook contains tons of information about palaces, museums, churches, and such, as well as information on the people who held administrative positions. But, as with all guidebooks, there is also info on restaurants, hotels, and transportation. We read, for example, that La Rossetta (phone 06 686 1002) serves, "scallops with cram of artichoke and mint" (page 89) We read that Trattoria Monti (phone 06 446 6573) serves, "sheep's cheese aged in caves, goose, swordfish, sultanas, and truffles" (page 138).

HOTELS. Regarding hotels, we learn that the recommended hotels in the district called, MONTI, ESQUILINO & SAN LORENZO, includes Villa Spalletti Trivelli (the rooms overlook the gardens of Quirinale); Hotel Duca D'Alba (the rooms have walls covered with fabric); Residenza Cellini (decor includes potted palms and oil paintings); and Albergo Giusti (this hotel is run by nuns. I guess that I should not be bringing my girlfriend to THIS PARTICULAR HOTEL!). The chapter on hotels (pages 236-248) contains a paragraph about each of 80 hotels.

WARNINGS. The book is to be commended for its honesty, and there are two pages that warn the tourist about pickpockets and gropers (pages 314-315). The guidebook also contains a chapter on history and demographics (pages 249-283), and we learn about various evil emperors and about recent political scandals.

CONCLUSION. The wealth of detail, intriguing facts, and anecdotes about history, will be an inspiration to all readers. My only complaint is that the photos are not on glossy paper.

a disappointment
By Giovanni Deamici
I have used Lonely Planets guide books for almost 20 years in three continents; this is the first time I feel the book is not worth the purchase cost.
Since Roma (Rome) is a city I have visited in the past, I was looking for hints and tips to less-visited places. After all this guide is supposed to be written by someone who actually lives in the city.
Alas, the volume is very skimpy in the discussion of the history and art of the monuments, to the point of lacking even what I would consider some basic info. The sight are grouped by areas, in haphazard order, so that one has to keep flipping back-and-forth through the pages to find the description of what he is seeing. The book index is poorly organized, and cross-references are few and far between.
No pre-defined walking routes are mapped or suggested.
The included city map is alphabetized atrociously; instead of being organized by the relevant noun, it takes the geographical identifier as the starting point for the index. So, for example, "via del Gianicolo" is found in the 'V' part of the index, and "passeggiata di Gianicolo" in the 'P' part, instead of both being next to each other in the 'G' part as "Gianicolo, via del" and "Gianicolo, passeggiata di". By comparison the free maps distributed by the local tourist office are an example of clarity and usefulness.
This was the first time I purchased a second guide (the Rick Steve's one, which is better but still not outstanding) and intentionally left this book in the hotel room, to avoid bringing it back with me.
I would reccomend this guide only to someone who thinks that the essential parts of travelling is sampling the local nightlife and shopping the high fashion district.

Let's go Rome!!!!
By L. Perry
No regrets on choosing this little gem. I only wish for more time in Rome!

Roma IS an amaaaazing city. You MUST see it.

And this is a good little guide. Things I really LIKE about it:
1) Handy portable size, small enough for a bag or to tote-along with you, but large enough to cram in lots of information and some pictures.
2) Though it doesn't really have a LOT of pictures (I wish for more), it does seem to have at least one good shot of most all of the big stuff (Rome is so FULL, it's really not possible for a small guide to photograph EVERYTHING).
3) The "What's new" section.
4) Handy details, like...where are the "loos" in relation to the Colleseum.
5) On a short trip? There are helpful suggestions like "Rome's Top 13" and a suggested three hour itenerary for the highlight's of the Vatican.
6) Got more time? Infomation on day escusions outside the side.
7) Month by month festival suggestions.
8) Clear tear out maps. Plenty of maps.

And...why it lost a star:
1.) I did want more pics.
2.) Wish it was a little more at-first-glance usable. Took a little more getting-to-know, but it was inviting.*** (This is the main reason for the lost star.)
3.) Wished for a few more short-trip maximize-you-time suggestions (like #5 above).
4.) Kind of wanted glossier pages.

Good stuff. It's not *perfect* but I recommend. And I would definately buy another Loney Planet Book.

PRINT SIZE: Not a criticism here. It HAS to be smallish to cram enough into this small book, but if you've graduated to reading glasses: Yes, you will need them for this.

Agile Marketing: Building Endurance for Your Content Marketing Efforts, by Jeff Julian

Each year marketing teams are asked to produce more content than the previous year while reaching an audience that is always changing. To accomplish these requests, we need a new set of tools for managing the way we produce content. These tools should allow our team to monitor our strategy, organize the development of our content, and provide the internal metrics we need to show our executive teams the cost associated with developing meaningful content. We need to be more agile. For nearly 15 years, Jeff Julian has used Agile processes to manage hundreds of software projects. These projects scaled from small teams with simple web applications, all the way up to large teams creating mission critical systems for the enterprise. These tools have proven useful for managing projects that last over an extended period, deliver assets frequently, and adapt to the changes that occur in the business. Content Marketing, when viewed with the original intent of the phrase based on practitioners who have seen success with the model, has many core aspects that align with the Agile process. Since the launch of his online community in 2003, Jeff taught individuals and organizations how to use Agile planning tools to break up work, prioritize ideas, and deliver great posts based on the desires of the audience. In this book, Jeff will show you how to adopt these Agile Marketing techniques and build up the endurance of your Content Marketing efforts so you can deliver assets to your audience while maintaining a pace that you can sustain over time.

Pain Relief for Content Marketing Chaos
By G. Davis
First, I have had the opportunity to meet Jeff, but we don't have any personal or professional connections. I was at an AMA chapter event where Jeff presented an overview of Agile Marketing. I was impressed enough to attend a day-long Agile Content Marketing workshop he lead/facilitated. My observations are:
1. Agile Marketing is a discipline that can help marketing departments with too much to do and not enough resources to get it done. It's a proven approach for success amidst chaos.
2. Jeff combines a passion for Agile Marketing with broad experience using Agile and a very practical approach to helping people begin using Agile techniques at work (and, for me, to help conquer my ADHD at home).
3. With Agile Marketing, Jeff effectively translates in-person training into book. form. I'd recommend this book to any one interested in learning a very valuable set of marketing management skills.

Jeff has created a step by step book for marketing ...
By Eileen Fisher
Jeff has created a step by step book for marketing teams to incorporate content into their marketing plans. Every marketer can benefit from the strategies in these chapters. Jeff's book will help you lay out a strategy to effectively reach your intended audience with a message they want to receive. Knowing your audience is emphasized greatly in this book - finding your audience, speaking clearly to them and at a rate in which they can consume it. Check out Agile Marketing - it is a worthwhile read!

Mark Rothko: A Biography, by James E. B. Breslin

A book of heroic dimensions, this is the first full-length biography of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century—a man as fascinating, difficult, and compelling as the paintings he produced. Drawing on exclusive access to Mark Rothko's personal papers and over one hundred interviews with artists, patrons, and dealers, James Breslin tells the story of a life in art—the personal costs and professional triumphs, the convergence of genius and ego, the clash of culture and commerce. Breslin offers us not only an enticing look at Rothko as a person, but delivers a lush, in-depth portrait of the New York art scene of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s—the world of Abstract Expressionism, of Pollock, Rothko, de Kooning, and Klein, which would influence artists for generations to come.

"In Breslin, Rothko has the ideal biographer—thorough but never tedious, a good storyteller with an ear for the spoken word, fond but not fawning, and possessed of a most rare ability to comment on non-representational art without sounding preposterous."—Robert Kiely, Boston Book Review

"Breslin impressively recreates Mark Rothko's troubled nature, his tormented life, and his disturbing canvases. . . . The artist's paintings become almost tangible within Breslin's pages, and Rothko himself emerges as an alarming physical force."—Robert Warde, Hungry Mind Review

"This remains beyond question the finest biography so far devoted to an artist of the New York School."-Arthur C. Danto, Boston Sunday Globe

"Clearly written, full of intelligent insights, and thorough."—Hayden Herrera, Art in America

"Breslin spent seven years working on this book, and he has definitely done his homework."-Nancy M. Barnes, Boston Phoenix

"He's made the tragedy of his subject's life the more poignant."—Eric Gibson, The New Criterion

"Mr. Breslin's book is, in my opinion, the best life of an American painter that has yet been written . . . a biographical classic. It is painstakingly researched, fluently written and unfailingly intelligent in tracing the tragic course of its subject's tormented character."—Hilton Kramer, New York Times Book Review, front page review

James E. B. Breslin (1936-1996) was professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of From Modern to Contemporary: American Poetry, 1945-1965 and William Carlos Williams: An American Artist.

Amazon.com Review
"I became a painter because I wanted to raise painting to the level of poignancy of music and poetry." Born Marcus Rothkowitz in a small Russian town, Mark Rothko immigrated to Portland, Oregon, in 1913, when he was 10 years old. "You don't know what it is to be a Jewish kid dressed in a suit that is a Dvinsk, not an American, idea of a suit traveling across America and not able to speak English," he later told fellow abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell. Rothko was a weak child, an abandoned son (his father had gone to America in 1910 and died of cancer just seven months after the family was reunited), a Jew excluded from high school clubs, a Yale freshman on scholarship, and a college dropout determined to become an Artist with a capital A. James Breslin has written an exhaustive biography of the painter. He pulled together all the facts of Rothko's life and carefully examined all the strata of the artist's personality--Rothko's sensitivity, his sense of displacement, his pride and his diffidence, his combativeness, his love for his children, his hatred for Marlborough Gallery director Frank Lloyd, and his difficulties with money. The book is flawed only by Breslin's ticlike use of italics, which give the sense of the author tugging at our sleeve in an unnecessary effort to persuade: "Rothko's last and most severe renunciations were made not to remove obstacles between the observer and the idea but in a gesture of personal withdrawal." But this is a relatively minor trifle that does not unduly detract from this large--and large-spirited--book about a tormented, brilliant Artist. --Peggy Moorman

From Publishers Weekly
A hefty, bear-like man with voracious appetites, an alcoholic who withdrew into isolation and took his own life, Mark Rothko (1903-1970) made paintings that transformed despair into transcendent beauty. Breslin's biography, a splendid achievement, exorcises Rothko's private demons and explores how he invented a modern art which enacted his inner drama. Born Marcus Rothkowitz in Russia, raised in Portland, Oregon, from age 10, the painter launched an iconoclastic underground newspaper at Yale, became a "self-made proletarian" in the Depression, and progressed from expressionist urban moodscapes to surreal mythic pictures to the free-floating stacked rectangles that are his trademark. A melancholy man who never felt fully at home in his adopted country, Rothko festered with indignation as an outsider, but once he achieved fame and insider status, he felt corrupted and doomed by it, according to Breslin, a UC-Berkeley Enlgish professor and biographer of William Carlos Williams. From Kirkus Reviews
The full-bodied fruit of seven years' labor--a zealous, uncommonly kind portrait of one of Abstract Expressionism's irascible masters--from Breslin (William Carlos Williams, 1970). Marcus Rothkowitz, born in 1903 in the Russian city of Dvinsk, emigrated with his family in 1913 to Portland, Oregon. Rebellious as a youth, he dropped out of Yale after a taste of refined Eastern anti-Semitism, turning instead to Manhattan and the painter's life. Impoverished, Rothko lived in a series of cold-water flats and run- down neighborhoods during the Depression and WW II, often confronting the city's museum establishment, which then had eyes only for European art. The painter's first wife's money demands--as well as the success of her jewelry business, which turned him at times into her salesman--resulted in divorce; but with remarriage in 1945 to the young, adoring Mell, Rothko came to be seen as one of a distinctly American group of artists. In the late 1940's, he embraced the abstract luminous colors and rectangular forms that became his trademark, and, in the hands of aggressive dealers, he went rapidly from rags to riches. Still defiant, he returned, after two years' work, a commission to paint panels for the celebrated Four Seasons restaurant when he realized that his efforts could be only decorative. Other commissions followed, but Rothko's colors darkened as his health and marriage deteriorated. In 1970, in despair and pressured by his dealer to sell more paintings, he committed suicide. Providing an expansive view of Rothko and his milieu, and rich in information about the New York art scene--but a breathless enthusiasm for his subject leads Breslin to descriptive excess, especially with regard to individual paintings. For Rothko, the best a book can do
By Paul Laub
No book can do Mark Rothko justice. He painted on large
canvases. To know him is to confront his original work
on the wall before you. Find your distance, 10, 15,
maybe 30 feet back. Yet to make sense of his
colored rectangles tearing themselves apart in fission,
as well as his earlier, quite different work, some
background helps.
Breslin's book will become the standard reference, but
not perhaps the starting point. He writes engrossingly,
but the 558 pages of text, I fear, will discourage the
casual reader (who might do well to read Robert
Hughes's paragraphs in American Visions).
Still, for the motivated reader, James Breslin's bio is
awesome. The Latvian Jew, charity student at
antisemitic Yale in the early 20s, uncomfortable and
smarter than most there, comes alive, as does his love
for children and their art, as well as his tormented
first marriage to a wife commercially successful during
the Great Depression making jewelry that sold. Rothko
had higher ambitions: fine art spelled with a capital
"A". As Breslin relates, discomfort never disappeared.
Success and recognition did not go over well with
this self-described anarchist who, as a Portland
teenager, enthusiastically took in lectures by Emma
Goldman. Overall, Breslin provides a biographical and
historical foundation with which to understand Mark
Rothko's painting. I am grateful for that.
Finally, of the many biographies I've read, James EB
Breslin's stands out for another reason: in his
Afterword, he turns from Rothko to himself and
addresses his own motivations and challenges in writing
the biography. Biographies are never "objective", so it
makes sense that a biographer might address his own
motivations. In the descriptions of the dangers of
doing research in Rothko's birthplace of Dvinsk, in
interviewing art historian Clement Greenberg, Rothko
reappears again, this time indirectly, one step
removed. That Breslin can bring Rothko alive in these
different contexts is testament to the enduring value
of this long, challenging biography.

Read This Book
By G. Snowden
I am a painter, an art professor, and a reader of biographies. I couldnt put this book down. Breslin did a magnificent job of getting inside the psyche of Rothko as a man, and as an artist. The paragraphs that describe the way in which Rothko created one of his paintings is absolutely inspired....I had goose-bumps reading it, because it seemed as if Breslin, unlike many writers who say they have observed artists, actually understood the process of creation and the passion behind it. I have never written a fan letter to a writer, but I began one to Mr.Breslin. Imagine my distress and sorrow when I read the next day in the paper that he had passed away! But this book lives as a testament to his thorough research and love of the subject. Get this book and read it....if you love art, artists, or scholarship, you will not be disappointed.

One of the best books on art let alone Rothko
By Thomas Mcmanus
Only a few biographies of artists are any good. A Giacometti Portrait by James Lord and Picasso by John Richardson and Jackson Pollock by Steven Naifeh come to mind. After reading this excellent biography I must place it with these great books. I am tired of reading art critics who obscure great art rather than illuminate it. This work opens up to the layman in simple and clear writing the beauty and complexity of this modern artist in his struggle to create meaningful and profound art. In this post modernist world such ambitions are scoffed at. Irony is easy but to be profound is the most dangerous thing an artist can attempt. He risks being pompous and bombastic. But Rothko avoids these pitfalls and in the process has become one of our greatest artists. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did. Books like this are rare. Get it.

Woe to the Women: The Bible, Female Sexuality and the Law: The Bible Tells Me so, by Annie Laurie Gaylor

Documents the bible's punitive rules and attitudes toward women. Exposes the bible's harmful stereotypes about women as sin-inciting temptresses and their treatment as male property. Examines biblical teachings about about women's "nature," prostitution, sexual assault and incest, so-called uncleanliness, marriage, motherhood, divorce and adultery, grooming, abortion, and homosexuality, as well as "macho" standards for men. A timely warning that the bible is a handbook for the subjugation of women, and that the only true barrier standing between it and women is a secular government.

Woe to the Women
By Tinker
This book was well written and was fluid in it's presentation I don't think much was left to wonder about the bible and it's poor treatment of women. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were several examples of stretching the meanings a little far which made the authors look overly reactive,in my opinion, but there was probably about 4 examples of that compared to a whole book of many examples of things that were absolutely right. This book shows why women have had an up hill battle for their rights for so long.

Excellent and Accurate
By D. Schramm
This book is very thorough. Christians who consider themselves experts (but won't read the book) could learn a lot from it. For example, in response to Tinker's four star review, Arden (who considers himself a knowledgeable Christian scholar) lectures her on the Adam and Eve account in Genesis and accuses her of putting her "own slant on" Scripture when she says womankind was blamed for the fall of man. Arden gets Genesis right - that only Adam was directly warned, and had he read "Woe to the Woman," he would have found that's the way Annie Laurie covered it too (second and third pages of the first chapter (Creation - Eve was framed). But Tinker is right that womankind is held accountable by the scriptures: Here is last paragraph from that chapter: "The myth of Adam and Eve is thrown back into the faces of women countless times by the New Testament writers. Timothy epitomizes the way in which the story was exploited in order to oppress and blame women: 'Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.'" 1 Timothy 2:11-14.

So, you have one fellow who tells a reviewer who has actually read the book, "Tinker, you have a LOT of reading to do!" (when it appears to be the other way around). And you have another reviewer whose one star review has nothing at all to do with the book, but is an inaccurate, vicious, personal attack.

For goodness sakes, people, if your going to comment on a book, at least READ IT! This one has a lot to offer.

The Bible Unexpurgated

The unvarnished, unadorned, actual words of the King James translation of the Holy Bible, with the passages that no decent, sane person could possibly believe are anything but the ravings of an uncivilized tribe.

Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings (Today Show Book Club #25), by Christopher Moore

Just why do humpback whales sing? That's the question that has marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing very big, wet, gray marine mammals. Until the extraordinary day when a whale lifts its tail into the air to display a cryptic message spelled out in foot-high letters: Bite me.

Trouble is, Nate's beginning to wonder if he hasn't spent just a little too much time in the sun. 'Cause no one else on his team saw a thing -- not his longtime partner, Clay Demodocus; not their saucy young research assistant; not even the spliff-puffing white-boy Rastaman Kona (né Preston Applebaum). But later, when a roll of film returns from the lab missing the crucial tail shot -- and his research facility is trashed -- Nate realizes something very fishy indeed is going on.

By turns witty, irreverent, fascinating, puzzling, and surprising, Fluke is Christopher Moore at his outrageous best.

Amazon.com Review
In his entertaining adventure-in-whale-researching, Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings, Nathan Quinn, a prominent marine biologist, has been conducting studies in Hawaii for years trying to unravel the secret of why humpback whales sing. During a typical day of data gathering, Nate believes his mind is failing: the subject whale has "Bite Me" scrawled across its tail. Events become even stranger as the self-proclaimed "action nerds," Nate, photographer Clay, their research assistant Amy, and Kona, a white Rasta (a Jewish kid from New Jersey), encounter sabotage to their data and equipment. They also observe increasingly bizarre whale behavior, including a phone call from the whale to their wealthy sponsor to ask that Nate bring it a hot pastrami and Swiss on rye, and discover both a thriving underwater city and the secret to what happened to Amelia Earhart.

Thoughtful, irreverent, and often hilarious, Moore has crafted a tale that contains a bit of the saga of declining whale populations due to hunting and habitat destruction, as well as his over-the-top, decadent wit as applied to scientific methodology and professional jealousies. Moore notes a pasty, rival scientist "looked like Death out for his after-dinner stroll before a busy night of e-mailing heart attacks and tumors to a few million lucky winners," and that killer whales (which are all named Kevin), are "just four tons of doofus dressed up like a police car." Smart, sincere, and a whale of a story, Fluke is terrific. --Michael Ferch

From Booklist
Biologist Nate Quinn has been researching whale songs off the coast of Hawaii for years, and although he enjoys his work, he's never discovered anything really earth-shattering . . . until the day he sights the whale with "Bite Me" written across its tail. This astounding spectacle soon leads him and his trusty companions--flirtatious research assistant Amy; Clay, his loyal photographer; their perpetually stoned surfer-dude helper, Kona; and Nate's ex-wife, Libby, now a lesbian (apparently because of an unfortunate encounter with a randy male whale)--on a surprising adventure above and below the ocean. This amusing pastiche cobbles together elements from all the classic sea yarns: from Jonah and the Whale to Moby Dick to 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. Unfortunately, the bland cover art, strange title, and lackluster jacket blurb will not help this book to fly off the shelves. Recommended for those looking for an idle beach read or something to take on a long plane flight. Michael Gannon

Go, go, go!
By daveSMASH
Some of Christopher Moore's funniest work. Or at least most absurd. Or at least, um, something. I've yet to read anything by him that didn't make me absurdly happy, and I've read, I think, eighty percent of his library?

This is a good, weird little story that never lacks for a smart laugh while still making you care about the larger narrative and the individual character arcs.

The scene with the boat the giant, yeah, appendages might not fall under the category of smart laughs, but it's one that'll stick with you for sure.

More good clean fun from Moore!
By RMurray847
I'm a huge fan of Christopher Moore, but when I read the description of the book on the jacket (something about scientists studying whales), I have to admit I wasn't too interested. But my faith in Moore caused me to go ahead and take the plunge. I'm very glad I did.

This is his first real "science-fiction" book, with the science of whales and whale communication playing an important role. As near as I can tell, much of the opening third of the book contains lots of "true" information about the state of our knowledge of whales today. Later, when the book goes off on some truly bizarre tangents, the "fiction" is well thought out. It's insane, but well thought out!

We follow the adventures of a group of people with various interests in learning about whales, from serious scientists to hangers-on, to stoners just looking for easy work. The best thing about Moore's novels are the wacky characters, who manage to become sweet and endearing by the end of the book. His novels are crazily plotted, but characters always come to the fore. There are some funny romances and some minor characters that are just a lot of fun. It's the kind of book that you imagine getting a big-screen treatment as you're reading it...you just want to start casting it in your head. And Moore, to me, is one of the few writers who actually evokes laugh-out-loud moments. Just clever turns of a phrase or an unlikely methaphor that makes me laugh in admiration.

I hesitate to discuss the plot, because to give you a sketchy overview might turn you off, and to go into depth would reveal too many of the delightful treats in store. If you've read and enjoyed Moore before, by all means take a look. If you haven't read Christopher Moore and are in the mood for some wacky but touching fun...take a look. I think you'll be pleased.

Whales and Their-uh-Songs-ahem
By Mary L Wagner
This book should be sold at the Phallic Museum in Reykjavik Iceland, right next to the preserved whale willies in their really really big jars. In fact, the most hilarious scene in the book has to do with the aforementioned items.
Fluke isn't as jam-packed with funny scenes as other Moore books, but it has plenty of unforgettable characters. Kona the ersatz Hawaiian Rastafarian was my favorite. Unfortunately, Moore couldn't quite slide his message in with the twisted humor as neatly as he has in the past (Lamb, Coyote Blue, ), so he was forced to put it in an appendix, albeit a humorous one.
In general, while Fluke was well worth reading, it was missing Moore's usual go-for-broke insanity

Lots of Ideas / Not Her Ideas/ Not For Beginners Limited on Money or Space/ Not All Natural Ingredients
By Suzzannemarie B.
I bought this book for natural soap recipes- and I agree with a few other reviews, not all the ingredients used are natural. I was hoping for some recipes with exotic cold pressed oils, but the recipes use common oils and butters, some good, some not good at all. Pros: the photos are great and so is the spiral bound design. Some of the recipes are simple. Some of the ingredients used are common and easy to find. Some of the recipes look really fun!
Cons: I recognized a great many of the designs from the Amy Warden Soap Challenge and the original artisan soap makers were not given credit (design ideas are not exclusive to the Soap Queen). You're gonna have to spend a WHOLE lot of money buying the molds she uses for the recipes and the equipment. Instead of telling you how many ounces a recipe makes- you get how many bars based on her molds (a pain in the butt for a newbie to figure out using your own molds.) More than half the book is for advanced soap makers. Some recipes call for food items like potato or cucumber or banana- however there are powdered extracts that would be much safer to use IF you were selling these soaps (as far as I know the FDA does not approve raw food in soaps). The book is a copycat of other artisans original works and really instead of using ordinary easy to find molds it compels you to go to her company to buy the equipment (or buy it cheaper here on Amazon :) SOME THINGS YOU NEED:You need a silicone log mold, a wooden slab mold, a individual silicone cavity mold, a silicone slab mold (smaller), and a long log mold with dividers, and round molds, embellishment molds, natural colorants, oxides, tons of essential oils, heating pad, section tools, sodium lactate (in all the recipes), cupcake mold, stamp, rubber mallet, sealable tea bags, herbs, bubble wrap, cookie cutters, powder sifter, chopsticks, frosting bag and tip... it goes on and on. This is not for the beginning soap maker that has limited funds and space (some recipes require the freezer over night). The simplest recipes are the Olive Oil Brine, and Oatmeal Soap for Babies. I give it three stars for the photos, layout, time and effort, the attempt of making it somewhat NATURAL SOAPMAKING, and the spiral binder, and because she used other artisans designs and not her own (even though she doesn't credit them).

Great book! Loved every page!
By Rosa
Loved this book so much that I purchased a second copy for my soaping sister. it is a beautiful book that is well write with a great layout. I read this book from cover to cover. I am an experienced Soapmaker who found it to be quite inspirational. I may try some of her design ideas; at the very least I will use the book for new ideas.

I have seen some complain as to what is natural or not. Anyone can argue as to whether this book uses "natural" ingredients or not. In the United States there is no legal definition for "natural ingredients ". If you don't like a particular ingredient, don't use it.

Not for beginners. Too many ingredients.
By Amazon Customer
I was disappointed in this book. It has a lot of good information, but the author is obviously trying to sell more of her products from her brambleberry.com website. There are way too many ingredients in each recipe. I can't blame her for creating a book in order to support her website. The "Everything Soapmaking " book by Alicia Grosso is so much better. Much simpler recipes that don't break your pocket book. I've been using it for quite a few years and I still use it.
