About the Author
Bennett L. Schwartz got his Ph.D. in 1993 from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.  Since then he has been  at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, where he is currently Professor of Psychology and a Fellow of the Honors College.  He is author or editor of 8 books as well as over 50 journal articles and chapters.  His textbook,  Memory:  Foundations and Applications, 2nd edition (Sage Publications) was published in 2014. At FIU, he  has won several teach awards and currently teaches courses in Memory,Cognition and Sensation and Perception.  His main research area is metacognition, but he has also conducted research in areas as diverse as visual percepton to evolutionary psychology  to the language of thought to memory in non-human primates.  Schwartz also serves on the editorial board of several journals and recently served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Research in Memory And Cognition.

John H. Krantz received his psychology PhD from the University of Florida. After graduate school he worked in industry at Honeywell on visual factors related to cockpit displays. In 1990, he returned to academia taking a position at Hanover College.  John has done extensive research in vision, human factors, computers in psychology, and the use of the web as a medium for psychological research. He has been Program Chair and President of the Society for Computers in Psychology and Editor of the journal, Behavior Research Methods.  John was the first to develop Web experiments in psychological science and lead the way on techniques for sending multimedia via the Web. He has served as a faculty associate for The Psychology Place developing interactive learning activities and created psychology’s first global web site for the Association for Psychological Science (APS). In addition, he is an author on both the Cognitive Toolkit and PsychSim 6. John is well known for his widely used online psychological experiments related to sensation, perception and cognition. His current research is focused on using the web for psychological research and modeling the visual system.

If I Die Before I Wake

I love most of the books from Dear Canada and Dear America and this one is definitely one of them! It has a span of about 4-5 months during the worst part of the flu epidemic. The author has a good sense of humor and is a wonderful writer. I like her other book "Orphan at My Door".
I would definitely recommend this to others!

Heartwrenching

Jean Little's contributions to this series are exceptional and "If I Die Before I Wake" is no different. Little portrays life in 1918 Toronto vividly. The Spanish Flu Pandemic is, of course, the main theme but various other topics are also explored: the last year of WWI, Armistice Day, class distinctions, women doctors and the growing changes in women's freedom. General everyday life is explored deeply showing the great conveniences now available since the parent/grandparent's Victorian days and the hardships the reader will notice compared with modern day's easy use of technology. Fiona introduces us to her unique family consisting of multiple twins, widowed father and Aunt caretaker bringing great character development and a charming, lovely household that we grieve with when the obvious death(s) occur(s). I was surprised though because I thought clues were being given that a certain character would be the one who perished and I, thankfully!, was wrong. The book is better given to the older age range of this series (8-12) due to the amount of death and descriptions of the disease. The ending is satisfying enough but the usual epilogue which tells what happened to the characters after the book was unusually depressing. Also includes some good photographs at the end, though more seem to be from Alberta & Manitoba than Toronto, where the book is set.

About the Author
"Shankar Prasad Ghosh received his BE (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Durgapur and Master of Electrical Engineering degree from Jadavpur University, with specialisation in High Voltage Engineering. Prof. Ghosh joined College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat as Lecturer in 2002. He is presently working as Head of the Department in the Department of Electrical Engineering at College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat. He has authored and co-authored several books, all of which have been published by Tata McGraw-Hill. He has also published several papers in national and international conferences. He is currently pursuing his PhD. His areas of interest include electromagnetics, high voltage applications, and power systems among others. Lipika Datta received her BE (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, and ME in Computer Science and Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology with specialization in Embedded Systems. She joined College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat as Lecturer in 2006. Prof. Datta is presently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat. The book defends the controversial thesis that the method of hypothesis, as described and practiced in the Meno, Phaedo, and Republic, is, when practiced correctly, Plato's recommended method of acquiring on one's own the essential knowledge we lack. The method of hypothesis when practiced correctly is, then, Platonic dialectic, and this is Plato's response to Clitophon's challenge.

Used this book at Western Washington University in 2008. I think I'd probably enjoy reading this book now more than I did at the time. It's a really interesting glimpse into China in the early 20th century, but does require some context to really get into it. At the time, it was one of several readings in my Asian Studies class, so it was difficult to get into - but a good book overall.

not my kinda thing

this book is highly touted as a great example of mao dun's socialist realism. well even if it is, i didn't much care for it. i found the heroine to be really irritating, and just her whole experience wasn't something i found myself very interested in. if it weren't for the fact that i had to read this book for class, than i highly doubt i would have finished it. even so, it's not altogether bad or anything, it's just not my thing. hence the review of 3 stars. also, just to note, i don't really like modern Chinese literature as a whole. that may have something to do with why i didn't like this work very much.
