The Ancients Still Get It On

"When it comes to the topic of sex, the combination of illicit thrills, prurient fascination, and a desire for the personal and the private means that critical faculties get all too often thrown out the window and we find ourselves unable to resist a juicy story, no matter how improbably." Thus writes Alastair J. L. Blanshard, who has maintained his critical faculties sufficiently to bring out an unlikely sex book about the role that sex played in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, and what we have been making of those Greeks and Romans ever since. _Sex: Vice and Love from Antiquity to Modernity_ (Wiley - Blackwell) is fun because of all the juicy stories, and Blanshard, a senior lecturer in Classics & Ancient History at the University of Sydney, has latched onto a topic that those who have otherwise no interest in classical history might find themselves enjoying. One of his themes here is that for their own purposes, people have changed and misinterpreted the legends about ancient sexuality, and his book is an engaging corrective.

For instance, Blanshard sets out to examine why it is that there is such a strong certainty that those ancient Romans were up to such a high degree of naughtiness. He says that "even the most cursory survey of catalogs of pornographic film titles will reveal no end of classically-themed erotica," and his own cursory survey includes _Serenity's Roman Orgy_ (2001) and _Caligula and His Boys_ (2003). (Blanshard's book is probably the only one I have read that jumbles references to porn titles on one hand and Suetonius, Aristotle, and so on, on the other.) Blanshard's chapter on orgies is an eye-opener. Everyone knows how those Romans had orgies complete with grapes, and everyone is just wrong. There is scant evidence that there was ever such a thing. "The Romans never routinely engaged in sexual orgies and would have been appalled that we thought that they did." Any references to orgies indicate one-off affairs rather than patterns of behavior. It is amusing that Blanshard gives an example of how Marcus Minucius Felix in the third century AD shows how the pagans described orgy activities of those demented Christians. When it came time for the Christians to take their revenge on the pagans, accusing them of orgies was just the thing, a concupiscent way of getting revenge and telling naughty stories, too. The other main theme in Blanshard's book is the difficulty of understanding homosexuality by trying to look at "Greek Love." The Greeks did have a tradition of discoursing about male - male relationships that would make such relationships seem a marker of Greek culture, but Blanshard says, "The notion that homosexuality was in some senses intrinsically Hellenic would have come as a surprise to the Greeks." Greek love was a cultural manifestation that we have difficulty in understanding, and can be interpreted in many ways. Blanshard traces its historical interpretations. There wasn't much made of it in medieval times because people were busy talking about the horrors of sodomy, and that so settled the question that it silenced any other discussion of male - male sexual relations. Blanshard traces how Plato's teachings about Greek love were rediscovered in the Renaissance, with a vital discussion between two particular intellectuals highlighting them and bringing Plato's other writings to the fore. The vehemence of the discussion is amazing, with one side seeing Plato as the source of all Christian heresies. In the Enlightenment, a stock figure for satire was the humanist teacher who uses instruction in the classics as a cover for seducing students, with pornographic novels showing masters giving hands-on instruction to demonstrate the Latin words for "underneath," "backwards," and so on. Blanshard includes an account of Sapphic love, and the use of ideas about Sappho (about whom there is almost nothing known for certain) to denigrate Marie Antoinette, an example of male anxiety being assuaged by derogation.

Blanshard has given a broad picture of ideas of sexuality in the ancient world, but also a history of how those ideas have affected us even to the present; his epilogue has two professors arguing about Plato in a Colorado courtroom in 1993. Blanshard's book is obviously the production of an academic, but the heavily-referenced pages offer surprise, not stuffiness. In a box about Ganymede, Blanshard explains that you can find a modern porn version of the erotic encounters of that desirable youth with Zeus, Hermes, Ares, and Apollo, with illustrations that "suggest that Ares would not have looked out of place in a San Francisco leather bar." Another box has an extended evaluation of the 1979 film _Caligula_, Penthouse's $17 million entry into art porn, about which Blanshard sniffs, "There is a problem in equating ancient Rome with nothing but sex." There was more than sex going on in the ancient world, but the sex that was there, and the ideas about it, Blanshard shows, are still on our minds a couple of millennia later.

A good reference book

I made a career transition into procurement strategy (from market research and strategy), so I purchased a handful of procurement textbooks to prepare me for the job. When I was reading the book, it helped put some things into perspective, and then the overall occupation did not seem as complicated. Its a subject matter that there isn't much research or academic thought on relative to other business functions, so there isn't much that can really be said. However, this book does a fairly good job of capturing what is known in the field. Its nothing bold, but it serves its function as a reference book for me.

Comparison of UK and US printing with a clear winner

I loved the artwork by Kerby Rosanes but really disliked a good number of things about the printing of the book. I became curious about the UK printing once Amazon merged the books into one item number and reviews for the UK book were consistently higher than those for the US book. I purchased a copy of the UK book to do a side-by-side comparison. I also purchased a second copy of the US version to have a “clean” copy to compare as I had already colored in my first book. I am including a silent video which shows a flip-through of first the UK and then the US version of the book. You may notice that I have some problems paging through the second, US version. It is because the pages are so thin, it is hard to just turn one page instead of several. Also, my photos will show a comparison of the books. The UK book is to the left or to the top of the photo as applicable.

The clear winner in all categories is the UK printing of the book. The sad thing is that the follow-up to this book “Imagimorphia” is being printed by the same US company (Plume). Keeping the adage of “fool me once” in mind, I will be buying the UK version of the second book rather than the US one. I still rate the book as 4 star on the basis of the UK version (which is also included for sale in this SKU.) The US version drops in comparison to a 2.5 star. I highly recommend spending the little bit extra and waiting a little while longer to get the UK version shipped to you.

Here is the data I used to come to that conclusion:

1. Size and Weight – approximate and listed in similar measurements for consistency and ease of comparison:

UK Version: 9 14/16 x 9 13/16 x 6/16 inches – weight 1.03 pounds (16.48 ounces)

US Version: 9 15/16 x 10 x 4/16 inches – weight .68 pounds (10.88 ounces)

The UK printing is slightly smaller but is thicker and weighs more (a whopping 1.5 times the weight of the US printing) which equates into a much heavier weight of paper used for the book.

2. Cover: The UK version has a thicker cover. It has a matte black background with the tiger in a glossy print that really stands out. The words are slightly different on the front and the back wording is quite different. The orange tone for the wording is a deeper and richer color than that on the US printing. The US cover is thinner and is a semi-gloss. The orange used on the words is more of a fluorescent color. I've included a picture which shows the UK version on the left and the US on the right.

3. Paper Quality: Here is a huge difference. The UK version has a nice heavyweight paper that doesn't crease easily and which does not show through the printing from the back of the page. The US version creases easily just from trying to turn the page and you can see the reverse print through on the page.

4. Binding: The UK version is sewn rather than glued. It is sewn in every few pages so you can remove that group with a few snips of thread. The US version is an odd hybrid. It is sewn in with multiple threads – but the threads go through the entire book and are spaced very close together. Cutting these could be a chore. The US version is also glued together. There are a number of pages where the glue extends onto the page and you lose parts of the design whether you remove the pages or not.

5. Print Quality: The designs are printed on both sides of the page and most spread across two pages. The designs merge into the binding and in some cases, with both printings, the two sides are slightly offset. I found that this occurred more in the US version and that the offset portion was more pronounced. Additionally, there is a weird area of white between the two-page spreads on the US version. It appears that they didn't print the entire image and just stopped at a certain point before the binding, i.e., you will never get to color the whole image because it was not included plus you get the weird dead white space in the middle of your book. I've included pictures which show the the problems with the US version - dead white area in the middle at the binding, some where you can see that the pages are glued together and you lose some of the image and finally, some where the images where offset to the right. In these pictures, the UK version is at the top of the photo and the US version is at the bottom.

The UK version has a crisper look to the printing. That may be a better quality ink or just what happens with a better quality paper. I've included a picture of the title page with the UK version on the left and the US version on the right. Obviously, the US version chose to use a lighter ink for the title but there is a difference in the rest of the print ink, too.

Also, while the US book is bigger, many of the images have portions of the sides and top and bottom missing. It appears that they enlarged the images. In some cases, they offset the images, too. There is a picture of a whale where the image has been shifted to the right, leaving dead space in the left side of the two pages and losing elements from the right side. Odd, to say the least.

6. Coloring Medium:

I will list the coloring medium I tested below. I am now testing a much larger group of pens/pencils than I did in my previous review.

All alcohol-based markers bled through the pages of both books immediately and to the same degree. The only water-based marker that did not bleed through was my TomBow with the brush end. If I used the marker end, it bled through, too. The US version showed more ink leakage than did the UK but they both did show some.

My gel pens with the larger points showed a shadow through on the US version when I used bright or dark colors. This did not happen with the UK version. None of the smaller point gel pens showed through on either version (Uni-ball Signo – my new favorite for detail work.) The gel pens did require a little more drying time on the UK version – this is something I have seen with better quality paper. As the ink is not seeping into the paper, it sits on top and has to dry for a minute or two longer.

There was a distinct difference in how coloring pencils worked with these books. The UK version took the soft core colors beautifully and the hard core pencils did not made indents that could be seen from the back of the page. The US version did okay with the soft core (but not as creamy or as good coverage.) The hard core pencils left distinct indents on the back of the page.

These are the coloring medium that I use for testing. If there is something else you feel I should be testing, please let me know and I will see if I can add it to my growing pile:

Markers: 1) alcohol-based – Copic Sketch, Prismacolor double ended markers (brush and fine point), Sharpies (fine and ultra-fine) and 2) water-based – Tombows dual end markers (brush and fine point), Stabilo 88, Staedler triplus fineliners, and Pentel markers

Gel Pens: Sakura, Fiskars, Uni-ball Signo 0.38/0.28 and Tekwriter

Coloring Pencils: Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, Derwent Colorsoft, Prismacolor Verithins, and Faber-Castel Polychromos

The Art work I LOVE. The quality of the paper in this AMERICAN ...

The Art work I LOVE. The quality of the paper in this AMERICAN version is awful and extremely disappointing. The fact that I waited for about 2 months for the American release of this book, only to get it and see how thin the paper was, was even more disappointing. After hearing how the other versions of this book were better in other countries, I ended up ordering another copy of this book (ISBN 978-1-910552-07-0) from London for $10.43 (free shipping). The European release of this book is both thicker and heaver. The American version weighs in at 10.8oz vs the European version weighing in at a whopping 16.5oz.

Very nearly a 5-star coloring book.

Brand new to the world of 'adult coloring' and colored pencils, this was the first book I purchased, along with a set of prismacolors. To make a long story short: WOW! Terrific drawings for the most part, with a few caveats - as an artist myself, I would much rather have spent a few dollars more, and received fold-out pages for the facing page drawings. It is impossible to color in the seam, even after "breaking" the book's spine. I also agree, that the partially finished drawings are a disappointment, as are the printed directives: this is supposed to be for adults, yes? Why then talk down at your fan base, as though they are children? I very much like that other than the little character doodles that fill space, the animal drawings are very realistic and also leave a great deal of room to be creative with your colors, instead of simply filling in tiny areas and lines. Excellent scale and depth, as well.

So far I have completed two pages, and am about 3/4 finished on another. I'm very much enjoying this book, and really wish I could give it five stars.

Santideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva Path

I first saw a copy of the original 1995 paperback version (with extremely small type) of this translation of Santideva's Bodhicaryavatara and, after skimming through it, decided to order it. When my order arrived, I was immensely surprised to see that it was a well-designed hardback. Having compared the several available translations of this text by other authors, I feel confident in recommending this translation for several reasons. For the beginner interested in Buddhism, Santideva's guide to the Bodhisattva's Path is a wonderful introduction to the basic concerns of Buddhism. The translators (Crosby/Skilton) have done an exceptional job of presenting Santideva's thought in accessible terms easily understood. The General Introduction (Williams) and the delightful chapter summaries help to contextualize what Santideva is saying. The reader's need to be included in the communicative process is always thoughtfully addressed. One experiences this text as a dialogue and not a monologue. For the experienced Buddhist practitioner, the detailed explanations and copious notes provide rich insights into Santideva's Madhyamaka School of the Mahayana branch of Buddhism. Finally, in reading this version of an ancient Indian Buddhist text, there is the obvious sense of a dedicated familiarity by the translators regarding their subject. This translation is both entertaining and informative regardless of one's level of knowledge of Buddhism.

A good guide to the life of the Bodhisattva

This book is about the Buddhist path to enlightenment, but contains many things applicable to improving anyone's life. It deals a lot with human suffering, and the need for people to help remove the suffering of others, as through this one's own life may be improved.
Although it is presented from a Buddhist perspective, much of the teaching is a good guide to self development, the principles that it teaches are hard to fault, and it remains centered on these things throughout the book.
The commentary deals with the Buddhist philosphies that Santideva uses, and explains the Buddhist principles involved, rather than explaining the teachings.
It gets pretty involved, but you can take quite a lot out of it.
"When the mental attitude of anger is slain, then slain is every enemy"......

Growing up in the West, I'd been exposed to Buddhism, more or less, through images of monks meditating and statues of Buddha, but I knew almost nothing about Buddhist beliefs. I admit that I was put off by the focus on suffering in the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, but I'm beginning to discover that 'Desire leads to suffering' is not that same as 'don't want anything'.

I think the chapters on the Perfection of Vigour and the Perfection of Forbearance are fantastic, and the final prayer in chapter 10 holds a benevolent subtext which I hope can exist in life. The chapter on the Perfection of Understanding is difficult, and was completely unexpected since it read more like a philosophy text than a religious one.

That sense of benevolence is present in most of the book, and most of this book's appeal is that it feels less like admonishment for doing wrong which I find in most Western religious texts than advice on how to improve with explanations of how those improvements will benefit the world and yourself. Whether that's true in Buddhist practice, I can't say. My own experience with Western religions tells me that there can be quite a difference between the stated beliefs and actual practice.

I notice that many of the other reviews focus on the translation which makes me feel like I'm way behind the curve since this is my first read of this book in any translation. Whether the translation is accurate or not is beyond me. I thought the text was clear, and there's a passion in the writing which was present in almost every word.

Not for everyone - a different approach to GMAT math

This book assumes a fair knowledge of GMAT math rules and principles. If you are a new test-taker and looking for your first book, this is probably not for you as you will be frustrated with a lack of a structured approach or basics overview. It is more of a finishing school than a primer. Just to give you an idea, the book opens up with mid/advanced level word problems.

On the other hand if you are getting above Q45, and have covered arithmetic, geometry formulas for circle area, you can definitely improve further. Here is what you will find inside:
- New approaches to questions that you may have struggled with or could not get, such as DS, Word Problems, Groups, or sets
- 200 realistic fresh GMAT questions (I had a few test my attention, such as prime integer questions)
- Time management improvements
- Good tips and reminders for a number of question types (yes/no DS questions, multi-answer DS)
- Suggests to avoid traps and careless mistakes due to division, skipping a step, or fraction error

Most of the questions in the book are worthwhile attention and will make you a better test-taker by either teaching you or exposing you to a type you may not be familiar with. The advice and techniques, however, will not apply to all of your questions on the Test, only the harder ones and only a fitting certain patterns. I would estimate that someone going for a score of Q49 or higher would get the benefit of these techniques on about half the questions. Someone shooting for Q44, probably only see hard questions that this book deals with in 33% of the cases. In addition, there is not much you can do with calculation questions of any difficulty - be it prime numbers, standard deviation, or permutations - those questions test your knowledge of formulas rather than logic.

Important to mention, the book is unorthodox - it is laid out differently from others (mentioned already), and does not follow a typical "teaching" plan; instead it focuses on certain areas, mistake areas, and question types. Some of the rules and strategies will be very different from what you have learned in other books or courses and your ability to use them will depend on how much you are willing to trust them and rely on them. As with any strategy, it is only good as long as you follow it. Make sure that whatever strategy you follow, you are comfortable with it.

Good concepts, poor layout

I have been studying for the GMAT for a while and when I saw this book available, I was super excited. I am a big fan of Max and couldn't wait to pick this up and learn some new techniques.

The concepts in the book are on point however, the book was edited really badly. The layout doesnt make sense, there are a ton of misprints and mistakes. The entire book seems like it was copy pasted from a Word document. This could have easily been avoided had a few test copies been floated to students. I could edit this book in a few hours and make the layout much more user friendly - this screams laziness.

Overall, it is a good book and if you want to pick up additional quant skills, I highly recommend it. Hopefully in future additions there will be a more thorough editing process.

Great material for easy review. Very comprehensive refresher. The lady is hilarious! I haven't taken the exam yet but I feel very educated. The other nurses at work keep referring to me as the walking enclopedia and go to for any nursing/medical questions.

Amazing!

Laura is super smart, and hilarious. All I used (and I passed first time) were these CDs, and the practice question book. She makes learning fun, has fun ways that the learning will not leave your head. Several items she said were on the exam, were on the exam. Listen to these, its a breeze!

This audio cd goes system by system to tell you what you need to know for the CCRN exam. The Pass CCRN book is way to detailed, but this gives you the important topics to study and know. She is very funny, and I saw questions on the text that were right out of her mouth. Worth every penny.

Madison Diligently Took Notes During the Constitutional Convention - Be there through his massive self imposed effort...

This is a long read and I am not quite finished. Madison took copious notes during the convention, never missing even a single day. He devised a method of shorthand and at the end of each day transcribed his shorthand while the days events were fresh on his mind. He believed, correctly, that posterity would want to know how the discussions transpired. The pace of the convention, the diligence of its attendees, the concerns, the solutions considered are vicariously experienced through Madison's notes. If you're a student of the Constitution and our Republic, worth the read.

Links Don't Work on Kindle

The content, of course, deserves five stars.

The Kindle formatting is strange. On my two Kindles (keyboard and paperwhite), the table of contents is not on the "Go To" list. You have to go to the cover and then go one page forward to the table of contents link--which works. When you get to the table of contents each of the convention days is underlined as though linked, but the links don't work. Clicking on any of them brings you to the opening page.

However, the table of contents and the links all work with the PC Kindle software. So, there is something strange going on with the formatting. The PC can read it, but my Kindles can't.

This means that on the Kindle you can only get through the 805 pages 1 page at a time--unless you want to guess by location numbers. You can also read through it page by page and bookmark each day thus creating your own links.

All in all, this version needs just a little work to be a useful digitally.
