Best First Aid Manual I have ever owned.

I have looked through many first aid manuals....Even invested in some. Between
an EMT training manual being a 10 compared to another type of manual which
has few pictures and less that adequate helpful information....this one would
definitely be an 8. Great colored pictures on each page..Step by step using
real pictures. Also the information covered....anything from bruises to head
trauma are covered What YOU as a non professional can do to mitigate
a situation. Also what items you need to have on hand and how to use them..
and why. Great book. Have not seen one better for the price..unless you want
to spend the big bucks for an EMT manual ..which would probably too much
information.

A good first aid manual for non-medical people

After having looked at a lot of books to have on hand for family members to use in case of an emergency, I finally decided on this one. Written for the non-medical person, it has lots of photos and diagrams, is clearly and simply written, and can be easily used in an emergency. I know that I may not always be present when first aid is needed, and it's nice to know that this simple guide will help my family know what to do. It would have been nice if the book went into more detail about some of the more difficult techniques for worse injuries or illnesses, but I am happy that it covers the simple first aid things well.

Well, it's DK so there are lots of pictures. Being as it's a first aid manual and not an EMT textbook, it's really quite good. And up to date. Kind of "first response for the rest of us." Clear explanations of many things, many of which aren't obvious. And free of some obvious things that are nonetheless in other, similar books (for example, "don't start CPR on someone who's been decapitated"). A little big/heavy for the average disaster-prep medic kit or auto kit, though, if that's what you want. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Stephen Orvis is professor of government and Associate Dean of Students for Academics at Hamilton College. He is a specialist on sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya in particular), identity politics, democratic transitions, and the political economy of development. He has taught introduction to comparative politics for 25 years, as well as courses on African politics, nationalism and the politics of identity, political economy of development, and weak states. He has written a book and articles on agricultural development in Kenya, has written several articles on civil society in Africa and Kenya, and is currently doing research on political institutions in Africa. Carol Ann Drogus is Senior Associate Director of Off-Campus Study at Colgate University. She is a specialist on Brazil, religion, and women's political participation. She taught introduction to comparative politics for 15 years, as well as courses on Latin American politics, gender and politics, and women in Latin America. She has written two books and numerous articles on the political participation of women in religious movements in Brazil.

Good Undergrad Introductory Text

Good comprehensive textbook for comparative politics, covering issues ranging from the role of ideology and religion in national stability to arguments in monetary policy. This text presumes no previous background in international affairs and the format and presentation are comparatively elementary. As others have mentioned, the hybrid format allows for tremendous flexibility in teaching.

The perfect make up book for beginners in Professional Make Up Artistry

The professional guide to make up artistry is absolutely perfect if you just starting out or want to refresh your skills.

It is practical, giving advise on colour theory,lighting,continuity,script breakdown,professional skin care etc. Yet it also remains creative giving excellent beauty make up examples and special effects.

It covers all make up from t.v through to film and theatre-although also covers more obscure topics such as body painting.

It is more theory based which i think is extremely useful and rare but therefore if your looking for a more photo based book this may not be suitable. It does contain useful pictures and diagrams where applicable though.

Overall extremely helpful and something as a relatively new make up artist I will always keep to hand and
recommended.

This is an awsome book if your studying make up or already a professional in the industry. It holds a wealth of information on everything form health and hygiene,colour theory, lighting theory, differences in cream/liqued/mouse foundations, period hair and make up and special effects. With so much more! It is highly text based, although does have very good diagrams and photos to demonstrate.It is not something I would recomend if your only wanting to learn make up theory just for yourself on yourself. I think their are far better books covering general make up for everyday living which would be easier to follow. As a proffesional make up artist this is something I will keep to reference if needed. I hope this helps you make a choice!

About the Author
Jane Brooks earned her doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley. She worked as a researcher at the University’s Institute of Human Development, interviewing, testing, and carrying out research on three generations of representative families studied at the Institute. Her publications include articles relating experiences in childhood to psychological health and social maturity in adulthood. She also worked on a research project in the Department of Public Health that resulted in an article describing the behavior problems of six-thousand children including children from four major ethnic groups varying in age from nine to eleven. She has been a lecturer in the department of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, most recently teaching developmental psychology in 2006. She also served for a number of years on the Clinical Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. Her primary work, however, has been children and families seeking help with the psychological difficulties of everyday life. She has taught many classes for parents, teachers, and pediatricians to improve children’s well being and functioning. Her background as researcher, teacher, and clinician, as well as mother, enables her to present a wide-ranging and detailed look at the experiences of parenting and ways to help children grow and achieve their potential in life.

A decent overview but some inaccuracies and biases

I've only read about half the book so far for my parenting class I'm taking. Overall it seems to be a fairly decent overview of what research and professionals are saying now, although I have spotted some inaccuracies in the book and it definitely shows some biases in certain areas. For example the book talks about the growing problem that there are more and more older people compared to younger people. Brooks says this is due to the lifespan increasing. The human lifespan is actually not increasing it remains around 120 years, it is life expectancy that is increasing not lifespan. She goes on to quote stats of life expectancy, I don't know if it was a mistake or is she doesn't know the difference between the two. Also it bothered me the way she described the 50's nuclear family as focusing on the emotional well being of all family members. This was far from the truth in many families which focused on the power of the male not on how everyone (particularly the wife and kids) was feeling. This seemed to reflect personal beliefs of the author or maybe she never really researched that particular area and just made assumptions. I'm a family development major and the "Lead it to Beaver" family was more of a myth than the norm in the 50's.

I don't really like the layout of the summaries at the end of the chapters either. They are a bit too brief and don't necessarily hit on all the main points.

Other than that it is a fairly easy read, it's organized fairly well, and has some good information and advice in it. Although I may sound like I don't like the book, it's not all that bad. It would be a mistake to "through the baby out with the bath water."

I purchased this book for school as required. I have to say there was some good information in it, but mostly it was a lot of repetitive points such as, spend time with your kids or they won't turn out right. Duh!

Quality Information Wrapped in Boredom

Firstly, the information presented in this book is AMAZING! I am learning so much about becoming a parent while I am becoming well-rested from using it as a pillow. I wish the author would have made the information more interesting. If I was a parent, I would not want to sit down and read this book during my leisure time because I would fall asleep. Honestly, I love the information. I love the explanations behind each parental concept and how a parent can improve on their journey of parenting. IT'S A GREAT BOOK! It's just the perfect illustration of BORING! I'm struggling to read each page and have found myself scanning through to get the important gist. Don't get me wrong, I will be using this book when I officially become a parent (by reading the content I highlighted and my side notes). I'm going to need to know how to use the I-Messages and Active Listening and especially how to ensure that my home is child-safe.

Excellent Reference Book for the Sewing Room!

As always, I review these types of books from the library before adding them to my collection. I had to wait 1 month to check out this one! This only the the 2nd book I've found to deal exclusively with machine feet; bar none - this is the best.

Around 30 feet were reviewed & each foot included detailed pictures of the various things you could produce with the foot plus detailed pictures of exactly how to use the foot step by step. In addition, the book detailed how 1 foot could 'cross-over' to perform multiple functions. Lastly, the author included detailed pictures and part numbers for each foot - some of which I've already used to add to my collection!

This book is a keeper. If you're like me, (I taught myself how to sew at 8 years old and have never had any training in 30+ years), I learned thoses feet can really help you out ;). I'm sure I'll use this book for years to come.

Sewing Machine Accessory Bible

I purchased this book the other day and am very pleased that I did. It is certainly a book to keep near your sewing machine, especially if you have a Janome sewing machine. Most of the illustrations feature Janome presser feet which is a rarity to see in sewing books. Other brands of machine feet are also shown so you don't have to be afraid that the book won't be of help to you.

This book is very well set up with Chapter 1 on sewing essentials including anatomy of a sewing machine and the different notions and gadgets now available to help you achieve sewing success.

Chapter 2 presents Basic feet with pictures of each foot being discussed, ideas for at least 6 sewing techniques that the foot can do and step by step instructions on the basic use of the foot. Each different foot section is 2-3 pages long in full color with pictures that are large enough to follow techniques. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 are set up the same way only they deal with Specialty fabric and technique feet, Pretty edges and Fancy Stitching. The last chapter of the book is a buying guide for machines.

Chapters 2-5 are the meat of the book and show many excellent ways to achieve different looks. If you don't have one type foot, you might find that you do have one that can mimic the same thing. You also might find that you will see feet that you want to put on your wish list or go buy immediately, as they will solve a particular sewing difficulty that you might have. I know I saw several feet that are on my wish list and seeing what they do and how they work helps me to know if they is something I really want. Some presser feet can be pricey so you want to be sure they are what you need to purchase.

I have many sewing books and this one is the best for discussion of sewing feet attachments. This book is a keeper. For logical set up, great pictures, and thoroughness, this book gets five stars from me.

MUST-HAVE Accessory book--here's why

I have a Janome sewing machine, a relatively ordinary model that does fancy stitches and came with only a few presser feet; zipper, zigzag, hemming, and a couple of others. But when you go to the dealer, you can find all sorts of specialized feet that add a lot of functionality to your machine. You can do fringing, add soutache (a sort of braid), you can put piping on pillows, and do all sorts of things that are especially fun if you do home decor sewing (my favorite), make children's clothing or do costuming for theater.

This book is updated and that's very welcome because there are new feet and new ideas. The book features a lot of Janome feet, which is great because that is a very common brand of machine. Other machines are discussed, however, such as Brother and Bernina. And many feet operate the same way, no matter what brand machine you own (and that includes one machine I have that is a 1953 Elna model.)

There is a fifteen-step buyers guide to help you figure out which feet you want to add to your collection (helpful because too many feet can be hard on your budget. Best to buy what you intend to use.) There is also a buyer's guide on types of sewing machines, and that is also helpful because one of the questions I get asked all the time is "which machine?" That depends on many things--basically what you intend to sew the most, or what functionality you wish to add that you don't have already and can't ADD to your existing machine. (For example, I want to do embroidery, so I added an embroidery sewing machine because I can dedicate it to monogramming or motifs for clothes and decor items. But if I don't intend to embroider, that machine would not be needed.) There is also a buyer's guide for sergers.

If you are a quilter, there is plenty here on walking feet and other accessories for quilting. But even if your sewing is going to be of the most basic kind, the first four chapters plus the buyer's guide are reason enough to have this book on your shelf. And you will get ideas for decorative sewing, which can be a very rewarding pastime as well as a way to customize your clothing. A few lessons on your machine, and you may never have to pay anyone to shorten a pant leg or sleeve again, once you learn how easy it is, and how you can even make the edge finished professionally in a few minutes. Highly recommended.

The best all-around ablation guide

This book, along with another edited in part by Dr. John Miller (Clinical Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology, w Ziad Issa and Doug Zipes) make up a core foundation of practical electrophysiology. This book provides more pragmatic information than other texts, without skipping the essential details necessary for a good case, but also without wasting excessive time in criteria unlikely to be used, or redundant verbiage. The tables are particularly well-done and help to guide you toward criteria, maneuvers, and parameters when you just need a quick reference in a case or consult. The other book provides the detailed explanation of the basis of each of the criteria and maneuvers, as well as a more extensive set of resources as to the primary literature. Even if you own the prior edition of this book, this is certainly worth the upgrade if only for the improved quality of tables and graphics. A great job by the editors, and a testament to the increasing quality of the expert consult series.

Great resource

Handy kindle edition but wish the TOC had alphabet links do so much scrolling was not necessary. Otherwise invaluable text for those seeking maker's mark identification on Mexican jewelry.

GREAT RESOURCE!

I just downloaded this book and am looking forward to using it as a portable reference in my searches for Mexican silver. To be able to have the book available on my phone or tablet while antiquing or shopping makes the buying Mexican silver more reliable and profitable. Billie Hougart is extraordinarily knowledgeable and the book is an amazing resource for collectors and novices alike. This is a 'must have" if you are on the hunt for the finest in silver.
