Two Pews From Crazy: My Insane Journey From Christian Fundamentalism To A Faith of Love Alone--LGBTQ Minister, by Cyd Andrews-Looper

(UPDATED AND REVISED EDITION)

"In Two Pews from Crazy, the author takes us on a painful but always hopeful spiritual journey that made me think of Pilgrim's Progress. Each time this lesbian Christian pastor nears the "Celestial City," there's another "Slough of Despond," "Valley of Humiliation" or "River of Death" to cross. It's a kind of miracle that Rev. Cyd is still standing after being born a female in a male dominated culture, after accepting her sexual orientation in the homophobic South, after refusing to renounce her call to ministry in a Christian community that forbids women clergy, after adopting a child, losing three different partners and suffering through spiritual and emotional abuse as a pastor.
Cyd has a great sense of humor. The chapters are short. Her story is honest, frank, easy to follow and never dull. And though her journey is sometimes painful to read, it is also a celebration of God's presence and power in the life of a lesbian, Christian pastor who never stops believing that God loves her and is with her every step of the way.
Reading Cyd's story reminded me that God loves me, too, and is with me on my own sometimes painful journey. If you need to be reminded of the Holy Spirit's presence and power in your life, just sit down next to Rev. Cyd just Two Pews from Crazy and enjoy."

'Come, journey with me and find your hope again.’
By Grady Harp
South Carolina born Cyd Andrews-Looper has the courage, the faith, and the infectious sense of humor to subtitle her memoir ‘My Insane Journey From Christian Fundamentalism To A Faith of Love Alone--LGBTQ Minister.’ And that sort of sums up the outline of this superb little book. The timing could not be better: we continue to find the media focused on gay issues, transgender issues, racism, the politics of fundamentalism, parenting, the role of the church/religious differences as they affect our life and ‘safety’ and on and on – and then up pops Cindy with a more than difficult personal history to relate and create a voyage of faith and hope and triumph for so many people. No, for all of us!

Cindy (that is her nickname of choice) states her reason for coming to commit her story in a well-scribed introduction – a passage that immediately draws us to her as a fellow traveller: ‘November 2014 I am in the midst of transition as I type these words. A month ago, I left an eighteen-year ministry as pastor of Holy Trinity Community Church in Nashville, Tennessee. I started a small Bible study in the fall of 1996, not knowing it would eventually grow into an amazing congregation representing God’s wonderful diversity. Since 2005, I have served as full-time pastor and spiritual shepherd to an open and affirming congregation whose arms are open to anyone who enters— men, women, children and youth, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, black, white, Latino, Asian, former Baptist, Pentecostal, Church of Christ, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Catholic, Episcopal … the list goes on and on. The congregation grew from a small Bible study of ten to twelve people to a congregation of more than 700. As difficult as it was to leave this congregation, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that my work at Holy Trinity is finished and that God is leading me to a new chapter in my life and ministry.’

From this open window we are privy to the ups and downs, the challenges and falls, the support and scoff, the real inside of what it is like to be a member of a minority struggling with prejudice. Cindy’s manner of writing is as inviting as a fine sermon by a congenial pastor and more. She is funny, truthful, honest, touching, and in the end – jubilant. Rarely has a writer been able to explore the trials Cindy has endured and still make us smile at the way in which she elects to inform us of the mountains she has had to climb – and the sun she has found at the top.

Yes, this book has a weighted spiritual side to it – we all need a bit of the true meaning of brotherly/sisterly love about now. Read this book and be elevated and thankful that there just may be other Cindys out there who need out support and we their teaching. Brava! Grady Harp, February 16

A powerful spiritual memoir with which I empathize totally
By Trudie Barreras
Once again, I need to credit my favorite author, Kittredge Cherry, for the tip-off to this book. “Two Pews from Crazy” by Rev. Cyd Andrews-Looper is a powerful spiritual memoir with which I can empathize totally. Although I placed my Kindle order for this book BEFORE reading the reviews already posted on Amazon (I always trust Cherry’s recommendations!) I was alerted to its importance by the fact that a number of VERY negative reviews were posted anonymously. From my own experience from 1978 – 2014 with the congregation and governance of a church ministering to the LGBTQ community, I am aware that although the practice of devouring and destroying pastors is a relatively universal phenomenon, those so-called “Gay Churches” or “Affirming Congregations” which have evolved in the past 40+ years are even more prone to dysfunction and drama.

Rev. Cyd’s story begins in the “usual” way for recent LGBTQ spiritual memoirs – she struggles with her conservative, fundamentalist upbringing, and eventually comes to the obvious conclusion that these rule-infested religious organizations do NOT, in fact, speak for God. Their rejection of homosexuality is only the tip of the iceberg of their lack of true discipleship when it comes to understanding and applying the Law of Love that Jesus came to teach.

I was pleased to note that a major influence in the author’s growth towards understanding that God’s love extends to everyone, and the prohibition of homosexuality really has no more basis than other narrow interpretations such as the prohibition of dancing, was her encounter with Dr. Rembert (Buddy) Truluck. As it happens, Dr. Truluck pastored the Metropolitan Community Church in Atlanta which I attended for over 30 years. Dr. Truluck’s tenure there was in the 1980’s, considerably before Rev. Cyd encountered him in Nashville. He is in fact the author of the book “Steps to Recovery from Bible Abuse”, published by Chi Rho Press in 1997, which I had the privilege of reading in draft form.

Rev. Andrews-Looper found that although the MCC congregation she encountered in Nashville offered affirmation of homosexuals as part of God’s beloved family, it was a theological mish-mash, and emotionally dysfunctional. I experienced this same reality during my time of attending MCC in Atlanta; for many years, it was the “only game in town” with the exception of the extra-ecclesiastical organizations such as Dignity (Catholic), Integrity (Episcopalian), and so on. By the time the author discovered this outreach, however, the Vatican had “lowered the boom” on Dignity, and the fundamentalist hard-liners had entrenched their homophobic stance in order to fight against Marriage Equality. Believers who had been rejected or abused by these groups sought acceptance in MCC churches, but they wanted a “culture” that reflected what they had grown to love in their former denominations, leading to inevitable conflict. On the other hand, the Episcopalians and several other mainline Protestant groups had begun to see the light, forming affirming congregations and even ordaining gay and lesbian clergy. Obviously, the United Church of Christ from which Rev. Andrews-Looper received her credentials is one of these. These affirming groups with their much more settled theology and governance structures clearly offered a better alternative to the dysfunction in her opinion.

One thing that becomes abundantly clear, however, as Andrews-Looper’s story unfolds is that those congregations which have broken away from the extremely restrictive patterns of more hierarchical organizational structures are still floundering in the cultural morass of spirituality versus sexuality. In addition, there are internecine power struggles that are directly related to the use of a “Board” or “Vestry” to govern local churches as well as an overarching denominational organization without real authority. Since I experienced an almost identical “ousting” of one of our MCC pastors by the combined machinations – I called it a “Star Chamber” – of the local board and the District, I could totally relate to what she went through.

Fortunately, the story does not end in the “slough of despond”. Rev. Cyd has discovered a new direction for her ministry, and is now firmly convinced that the commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” does indeed mandate a healthy self-care and recognition that ministry requires a necessary balance. She has discovered the value of meditation, and because I’m blessed to have become devoted to centering prayer with its values of silence, solitude, simplicity and service, I believe she is indeed “on the Path”, and will continue to be a faithful follower of Jesus, with a fruitful and blessed ministry.

Live in your own truth with God
By Amanda L. Thornsberry
The journey of this book took me on the most intense rollercoaster ride of emotions mainly because I have been a member of the church since 2011. Before I move forward with the rest of my review of the book allow me for just a moment to give you the background of where I am today spiritually.

On December 28, 2010 I was driving from my hometown of Eastern Kentucky after a week of celebrating Christmas with my family. As usually I left feeling a mix of emotions because I had mostly felt like I didn't belong anywhere mainly for being different and constantly feeling judged primarily from conservative Christians. Most LGBTQ individuals have experienced this same judgement and emotions, mine is no different. On this particular day it was slightly different, nothing specific happened during my trip other than I was at the end of my rope of feeling confused and not knowing if I was even worthy of walking this earth.

I wanted so much to be normal and like everyone else without feeling judged by being nothing but exactly who I am. I knew I couldn't changebelieve me I triedbut you can't change what God created in the first place. So, I accepted that if I was going to go to Hell (according to the conservative Christians who worship a wrathful, judgmental God) then so be it. But that mindset left me in loneliness. Which brought me to this particular four and half hour drive home back to Nashville.

For the first time in my life, I had an open and honest conversation with God. I basically said "If this is who I am supposed to be then why did you make me like this?" God replied "You are my child and I love you". Me "Then why do I feel so alone, so judged and not worthy?" God replied "You are my child and I made you exactly the way I wanted you to be." Me "Then if I am worthy of walking this earth so me the way. I am at the end of my rope, God, and I can't take it much more." God replied "Just follow me and I will lead the way". There was more to the conversation and a lot of tears. God had the steering wheel because I do not know how I made it home safely with nothing but tears in my eyes.

I share this story because the next day I began searching for LBGTQ-friendly churches around Nashville. I found, you guessed it, HTCC. Being a reserved and cautious person, I contacted Pastor Cindy via email to see if she was willing to meet with me and we set up an appointment. The moment I walked into her office I felt welcomed but I also felt scared and uncertain of where God was leading me. That day was the first time that I had a pastor welcome me like any other person. My gender, my sexual orientation, and my identity was not on trial. Me as a human-being, a child of God was lost and searching for a way to be found. Needless to say, she invited me to attend a Sunday sermon. I accepted but it took me a couple of weeks to muster up the courage to walk inside the church but the day I did I was welcomed with open arms and I felt a breath of fresh air. I sat in the pew in the "old" sanctuary and listened to the first sermon that spoke of nothing but Gods love for all his children. Then I heard the scripture Jeremiah 29:11. This was the first scripture I had heard that wasn't twisted into telling me I was going to Hell. It was God's true message to me "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future." That was what God has been trying to tell me all along. That day, God led me to HTCC and literally saved my life. I don't believe I would have hurt myself but I was very close to really not wanting to be on this earthy anymore but I will never know because God saved me before I could do anything.

The moral of sharing this story is that I write this review from a viewpoint of seeing HTCC as my lifesaver and the lifesaver of countless others. My experience with HTCC since 2011 has been nothing but positive and the sermons by Pastor Cindy, Pastor Patricia, and Pastor Bryan have all been unique but shared the same type message. God loves you no matter what.

After reading this book I was shocked by Pastor Cindy's experience as the senior pastor. I am also grateful that it was transparent to me and majority of the congregation because in the house of the Lord, it is about one thing worship and being one with God. I am also very shocked by the hateful, negative comments left by those that have seen this book as filled with lies. For someone like me, the only thing this entire situation causes is confusion because who can I believe "a Pastor who God led me to or comments from people behind a computer screen who point the finger at someone who is doing nothing but revealing her truth?"

I became a member of HTCC 6 months after becoming a regular attendee and I was baptized in the church. I was not around when all of events took place but when I came back one Sunday it was shared with the congregation (with UCC presence) that Pastor Cindy would be taking a sabbatical. Due to my work responsibilities I had missed several more Sundays including the one where it was announced that Pastor Cindy was leaving the church.

So, you can imagine for someone like me who found HTCC as her lifesaver to be nothing but confused and hurt by not only the revealing nature of this book but by the hateful, finger-pointing, negative comments from other members of the church. It has given me the confirmation that organized "religion" and churches are nothing short of just a business who talks about the love of God but doesn't have the actions (in the end) to show it. HTCC has become nothing but like all the churches around. A church is supposed to be a place for people like me to come and be one with God to spread his love and message of hope to all who do not know Him. Instead, we a church divided and members left stunned with the results of a revealing book.

The only thing I can say to all involved is stop the childish finger-pointing and the negative comments that is doing nothing but causing more hurt and confusion than there already has been. Most of all, stop the chatter and sit in the quiet so that you can hear the truth in others whether you agree with it or not. I am disappointed but with everyone in the way this is being handled from both sides of the fence.

Thank you Pastor Cindy for sharing your truth and to all who have shared their truths in the comments. It is time to move on and be one with God. After all, life is not possible without Him.

I bought this to help me make a plan to work with teens. I was a little disappointed because I was looking for something more in depth and workbook type. But it is good information with good pictures.

Every yoga teacher should own this.
By Mrs. M. Morgan
I have bought many (MANY!) yoga books in my time. Some are read and placed on a shelf forever more; others are dipped into every now and again; and one or two are forever on my coffee table, ready to be thumbed, read and digested whenever I'm getting ready for a yoga class.

`Yoga 4 Teens' is one of these books. After reading the information on Christy Brock's website, I knew it would be good, but nothing could have prepared me for just how wonderful it really is.

The book is described as spiral bound, which brings to mind a flimsy, paper-backed manual which will soon start to curl at the edges. However, that is NOT the case with this book; it is spiral-bound with a difference. If you have David Swenson's Ashtanga book, you'll know what I mean when I say it is spiral-bound, but then covered with a hardwearing board cover. This ensures that the book can be carried around without getting damaged, which is good news for a teacher's manual.

The book is divided into three parts: `What to know'; `Poses and teaching them'; and `Sample classes'. It is followed by an Appendix which includes charts, lists of postures, resources, quotes and more.

The three parts of this book are everything you could ever wish to know about teaching yoga to teenagers. (And incidentally while it is aimed at the teenage market, it is also a wonderful resource if you teach younger children too). Chapters in Part one include: Establishing a teaching position; Classroom space and props; Principles of teaching teens; Yoga philosophy in the teen classroom; Practicalities; and Class planning.

This part of the book is a fantastic resource for preparing yourself to teach teens, while part two is everything you need to teach the postures themselves - from standing postures to relaxation and everything in between. This part of the book takes up over 100 pages and is illustrated throughout with hundreds of photographs demonstrating all of the postures. There are even extra sections on menstruation, breath awareness and special cases.

Part three includes five sample classes and three objective-specific classes, all of which are illustrated and described with both the English name and the Sanskrit.

After spending an afternoon in the company of `Yoga4Teens', I can truly say that I have never come across a teacher training manual like this one. It is concise, informative and hugely descriptive. As a yoga teacher I have spent many years teaching either young children or older adults, but I have always shied away from the teenage market, fearing I might not be cool enough for them! However, now that I have this book by my side, I really do feel as though I am now equipped with the answers to every question I could possibly have, and I'm now looking forward to teaching teenagers in the future.

As for the authors - Christy Brock and Jennifer Lightsey - their enthusiasm and love for teenagers comes shining through. Many, many hours must have gone into writing this guide and this really shows in the text. I think it is their passion for teaching (and for teaching teenagers in particular) that really makes this book so worthwhile.

And talking of passion for teaching, Christy has also compiled an e-book for those interested in teaching teenagers, entitled "Teaching Teenagers Yoga". It is a combination of practical advice and inspirational guidance from many yoga teachers, all recalling their experiences of teaching teenagers and what has worked (and hasn't worked) for them. At 19.95 US dollars, it is a great addition to your bookshelves - particularly because it's an e-book so you don't have to wait days or weeks for it to be delivered.

I'd recommend Christy's books to anyone not only interested in teaching teenagers, but also anyone who actually has a teenager at home. The information contained in both books is tremendous and I for one am very proud to have both manuals in my collection.

Very helpful and fills a much needed gap
By La C.
I recently purchased this book becasue I teach a teens yoga class through the Boys and Girls Clubs and it has been a fabulous help in my classroom.

I do not have a background in teaching yoga, but have 12 years of practice. This book has helped me hone my teaching skills, and verbal instruction. It has also sparked ideas for classroom discussion, something the teen girls really seem to enjoy.

The book starts off telling you what to expect in teaching yoga to teens, not incredibly helpful if you have worked with teens previously. However, if your background is in yoga, and you are new to working with teens, it could certainly be helpful.
The book goes section by section on different types of asanas (standing, inversions etc.) then at the end of the book it organizes them into yoga lesson for you.
It is certainly asana focussed, so I am bringin my own meditation lessons and crafts (eye pillows) into the classroom. However, the guidelines for instruction are really fabulous and the difficlty levels span run the spectrum from very intro to very advanced.

Class Notes: Posing As Politics and Other Thoughts on the American Scene, by Adolph L. Reed

Hailed by Publishers Weekly for its “forceful” and “bracing opinions on race and politics,” Class Notes is critic Adolph Reed Jr.’s latest blast of clear thinking on matters of race, class, and other American dilemmas. The book begins with a consideration of the theoretical and practical strategies of the U.S. left over the last three decades: Reed argues against the solipsistic approaches of cultural or identity politics, and in favor of class-based political interpretation and action.

Class Notes moves on to tackle race relations, ethnic studies, family values, welfare reform, the so-called underclass, and black public intellectuals in essays called “head-spinning” and “brilliantly executed” by David Levering Lewis.

Adolph Reed Jr. has earned a national reputation for his controversial evaluations of American politics. These essays illustrate why people like Katha Pollitt consider Reed “the smartest person of any race, class, or gender writing on race, class, and gender.”

Amazon.com Review
Eschewing both left-wing political clichés and stereotyped opinions derived from the 1960s civil rights era, Adolph Reed Jr. has forged his own intellectual path. In this impressive collection of essays, Reed turns his keen intellect on a variety of issues, many of which revolve around the decline of the American Left since the '60s and the rise of race-based demagogues like Louis Farrakhan. He also examines what he sees as the hopeless nihilism expressed in hip-hop music, debunks the belief that black anti-Semitism is on the rise, and analyzes the phenomenon of black intellectuals acting as cultural gatekeepers for whites all the way back to Booker T. Washington. A political science professor at New York City's New School of Social Research and the author of W.E.B. Du Bois and American Political Thought and Stirrings in the Jug, Reed confronts fellow thinkers such as Robin D.G. Kelley, William Julius Wilson, and others on the topic of American poverty in a firm, though respectful, way. Reed has carefully observed what has been going on in the United States for nearly 35 years and is capable of expressing cultural highs and lows with admirable clarity and sensitivity. "The failure of disciplined strategic thinking on the left is a serious problem," he writes. "It reflects and stems from the extreme demoralization and isolation that has plagued us for two decades. We'll never be able to build the kind of movement we need unless the left can find its moorings and approach politics once again as an instrumental, rather than an expressive, activity." --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
Reed (The Jesse Jackson Phenomenon) doesn't have much patience with what he views as the mushy liberals of the Democratic Party and black intellectuals like Michael Dyson and Cornel West. In these essays (most of which have appeared in publications such as the Progressive and the Village Voice), Reed offers his bracing opinions on race and politics in the 1990s from a "left-critical perspective." Black "leadership" substitutes for popular mobilization, he argues, while nostalgia for black unity under segregation falsifies the past and serves reactionary interests. He finds consonance between the black establishment and Louis Farrakhan in that they consider the inner-city poor "morally defective," and contends that the white Left won't confront the complexity of black politics ("They simply do not see political differences among black people"). In perhaps the most memorable essay, Reed pungently analyzes what he calls the "crisis of black intellectual [life]" (in which a "lucky few," West and Henry Louis Gates Jr., for instance, direct themselves more to a white audience than to blacks). The author, a leader in the nascent Labor Party, values the primacy of class politics over so-called cultural or identity politics ("If we don't organize on a class basis, we'll be picked off one at a time, as we were with 'welfare reform' "), preferring "real" class politics, based on people's daily lives. But his snapshots of such organizing based on class are too briefly presented for readers to evaluate. Similarly, his forceful but too-brief argument against stigmatizing the "underclass" ("poor people are just like everyone else") invites a deeper critique of the work of those (e.g., Nicholas Lemann) whom he attacks.

From Booklist
Reed, who teaches African American studies and political science at the University of Illinois, Chicago, has long been a provocative contributor to the national conversation about race. Many of this volume's 30 essays are drawn from Reed's columns in The Progressive and The Village Voice. In the section "Issues in Black Public Life," Reed addresses segregation, anti-Semitism, the lack of a black political movement, O. J. Simpson, and Louis Farrakhan. In "Equality and Ideology in American Politics," he considers the black underclass, family values and welfare reform, and Herrnstein and Murray's The Bell Curve. In "The Question of Practice," Reed looks back at the Brown decision and at New Orleans' controversial Liberty Monument, examines ethnic studies in the academic world, and discusses "building solidarity." At the center of Reed's analysis is his belief that "understanding American politics and organizing effectively to operate within it require recognizing the centrality of class forces and dynamics in shaping consciousness and establishing both lines of cleavage and possibilities for solidarity." Well Argued

Highly recommended reading whether you agree with the author or not. A revealing quote from this book: "I do not want to hear another word about drugs or crime without hearing in the same breath about decent jobs, adequate housing and egalitarian education." Those are all addressed together, from the opposing point of view, in Heather MacDonald's "The Burden of Bad Ideas." Read them together and form your own opinion as to the cause of failure in urban America. Reed argues well but I think MacDonald wins in this debate.

Forceful and Honest
By A Customer
"Class Notes" should be read by everyone, especially those who identify with the left and care about the state of black politics. Reed maintains that he is toward the statist end of the left and he debunks the current conservative ideology that "Big government" is a failure. But Reed saves his best ammunition for so-called black leaders and intellectuals such as Louis Farrakhan,Jesse Jackson,Cornel West, and Henry Louis Gates Jr. In order for any progressive movement to succeced it needs to be class-based, but with a concern for those still suffering discrimination. This book is essential reading.

Class Notes: Posing as Politics
By A Customer
Adolph Reed looks at issues, getting past media representations and demagoguery to consistently, doggedly return the reader to the fact that poverty is not the fault of the poor, and the only way to improve things is to do the hard work of organizing active political bodies and force change. He is succinct, accurate, and appropriately scathing. Give this book to someone who gets their politics via the major media; it should at least make him or her angry.

"F" stands for "funny" in this perfect gift for students or anyone who has ever had to struggle through a test and needs a good laugh. Celebrating the creative side of failure in a way we can all relate to, F in Exams gathers the most hilarious and inventive test answers provided by students who, faced with a question they have no hope of getting right, decide to have a little fun instead. Whether in science (Q: What is the highest frequency noise that a human can register? A: Mariah Carey), the humanities (Q: What did Mahatma Gandhi and Genghis Khan have in common? A: Unusual names), math, or other subjects, these 250 entries prove that while everyone enjoys the spectacle of failure, it's even sweeter to see a FAIL turn into a WIN.

Laughed so hard, I cried
By Suzanne Jackson
I purchased this book because my school is currently going through the madness of state exams. I thought it would be a nice book to share with the faculty to relieve some of their test-associated stress. I am sure they will enjoy it because there were many "laugh out loud" moments. One example from the book had me in tears as I tried to read it to a family member (mostly because I couldn't get through it without bursting into laughter).

I would recommend reading this book in small doses. A page or two, here and there, to lighten your mood. Otherwise it does get a bit repetitious.

The book also would make one think about test question creation. Some of the questions are so poorly worded the snarky student answer is almost expected.

I would highly recommend this book to any teacher.

Construct A Banana Car...
By Robert I. Hedges
"F in Exams" is a small collection of bizarre and wholly incorrect answers to scholastic test questions. Richard Benson has collected these and broken them down into various categories such as physics, math, chemistry, and psychology. The book takes less than half an hour to read cover to cover, but produces quite a few snickers along the way. Some of my favorite questions and answers include:

What instrument do you use to measure temperature? A trombone.

Name an environmental side effect of burning fossil fuels. Fire.

Explain the word "genome." It is an abbreviation of the two words: Gender and Gnome.

Name the wife of Orpheus, whom he attempted to save from the underworld. Mrs. Orpheus.

Who was Solomon? He was a very popular man with 700 wives and 300 porcupines.

What was the main industry in Persia? Cats.

Claire used good body language at a job interview. Can you think of three examples of good body language that Claire may have used?
1. Pole dancing
2. The Moonwalk
3. The Bolero

Finally my favorite question is found in the math section where the teacher had written "Construct a rectangle with sides Y and ends Z." This not being to the taste of the student, he (or she) scratched out all but the first two words of the question and rewrote it to read: "Construct a banana car." What followed was a very interesting drawing of a banana car and the line "I want to retake this test." I'll bet.

The questions and answers in the book vary in humorous content, and there are many examples circulating on the Internet that I consider to be at least as good as most of these. Still, for anyone who has ever been dumbfounded by a test question and decided to give a ludicrous answer, or especially for teachers who have seen more ridiculous answers than they can count, this book is worth a quick read.

Jay Leno was right
By eSparty
Remember that Leno segment, where he quizzed people in public places - usually on some history or geography trivia? And how it was at once amusing and embarrassing to watch them fail miserably at the most basic of questions? Well, turns out those people, in their formative years, were the students featured in this book. And they were all very funny then.

This book is a gem, or rather a collection of gems. I recommend not reading it in one sitting, but flipping to a random page or two and getting your laughs. Guaranteed to elevate the crabbiest of moods, this book is a coffee-table essential, and can really get a dinner party going.

The banana car has definitely come to represent this book, but I assure you that the book is replete with even funnier examples.
Just to whet your appetite, from the "Business and Technology" section:

Q: What happens during a census?
A: During the census a man goes from door to door and increases the population.

I am very glad I bought this book, and very regretful that I did not become a federal census bureau employee.

Lost in the mists of time and legend is the true history of Britain before the arrival of the Romans and after their departure. Using ancient historical records, this book asserts that Britain was never fully conquered by the Romans but retained its culture as its royal families intermarried with the caesars. Two British kings, both named Arthur, became the single King Arthur of myth and legend. As a result of 40 years of research, this book reveals the location of the graves of both Arthurs, the burial place of the “true cross of Christ,” and many other mysteries. It challenges many orthodox beliefs perpetuated by a church that long ago lost touch with its roots.

Good For The Uninitiated, Somewhat Dubious For The Rest
By D.A.Knight
The book was worth the money paid. It will stay in my library. It did grab my interest a few times. But, it in no way compares to The Age Of Arthur, by Morris, which to my mind is the definitive book yet, in this field, and those who were left disappointed by this book should seek out Morris' book! Holy Kingdom will seem a good enough book to those not so widely read as others, otherwise it doesn't add much more than a few good ideas. Though sometimes interesting there wasn't anything "explosive" about the book. The suggested locations of Arthur's grave and Camelot, though argued well, still didn't provide anything irrefutable. I found their theories about the plagues and comet tails interesting, but old, by the time I read it. This book, unlike Morris', follows the growing trend of one individual and a few others, conversing, putting forth hypothesis' and exploring probabilities amongst themselves, and putting such things to paper. It is `conversational' in that, this is the kinds of things pseudo-intellectuals talk about around the fireplace, smoking their pipes. It is not an academic work, by any means, for an academic, bound by scholarly-essay conventions could have done in 100 pages what they do in 400+. Much of their text, extraneous, would have been excised, or reduced to a series of end-notes. This should have been as short as King Arthur: The True Story by Philips and Keatman. If you've read a dozen books on this topic, skip Holy Kingdom. If you're just starting to explore this field and haven't read much, this is as good an introduction - with its negatives and positives - as any. As a philosophic travelogue, I would give it five stars. As a piece of scholarship, I would give it two stars. Lets just call it three stars average.

Mind boggling!
By A Customer
What a book. I mean where have Wilson and Blackett been all my life? Their book is excellent with cogent argument, the power of years of on-site research and clear identification of source material.
Forget Morris, Ashe and Alcock. The latter had to admit that all the sites around the supposed "camelot", Cadbury Hill, Somerset, were forged in the 1500s by John Leland. A casual glance at Wilson and Blackett's chapter on "The Glastonbury Hoax" plus some research of my onw indicated that the "Glastennen" referred to in ancient Manuscripts dated to circa 250 AD. The fake tourist and music festival site of Glastonbury, Somerset, was founded in 941, so it can't be the same place!
Wilson and Blackett are really onto something and this book is but the tip of their particular iceberg. No wonder David Ford, Robert Vermaat and friends are panicked. Take away the Avalon and "mystical Arthur" material so favoured by the dreamers and you get to the truth.
That truth, about the real Arthurian Dynasty of the ancient Britons, warts n all, is for all to read. I do hope people will get their copy soon, to avoid disappointment!

A great book on ancient British history
By Mike Wortmann
I really enjoyed reading The Holy Kingdom and although I'd be interested to read more about Prince Madoc in America this book acts as a great introduction to the work of Alan Wilson and Baram Blackett's Ancient British Historical Project.
I am heartened that the Holy Kingdom is now available in the USA; this project is of immense significance and if we are to flesh out the history of Madoc and Arthur in America in the sixth Century then we need to know where we're coming from...
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It does indeed seem as if Adrian Gilbert caught on to Wilson and Blackett rather late and had an editorial role, whereas they have done all the meaningful research.
Let's hope this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the publishers and these British historians. Rich in detail, racy in its commentary and sober in its reflection, The Holy Kingdom takes you to the sites of every relevant King Arthur story and even provides a twist in the tale in its debunking of the current Glastonbury hoax...
This is a great book, in so many ways...
