The great house and grounds of Althorp in Northamptonshire have been home to the Spencer family for nearly 500 years. They first leased farm land in the area of grazing in 1486, and in 1508 Sir John Spencer acquired the 300-acre estate on which he built the first house. Since then, Spencers have lived and died at Althorp for twenty generations, and the Park has now taken on an added significance as the burial place of the most loved princess of the twentieth century.

Charles Spencer, who became the ninth Earl in 1992, has a deep love and knowledge of the house, reflected in the fact that he acted as a guide there when he was just twelve years old and in the tremendous redocorative work he has undertaken in recent years to restore it to its former glories. In 1998 there was further major work with the adapting of the quite beautiful Stable Block--once home to 100 horses and forty grooms--into a center for visitors incorporating an exhibition celebrating the life of Diana.

Earl Spencer has written a fascinating account of the house that combines the details of art and architecture (Althorp has one of the greatest private art collections in the country, including paintings by Van Dyck, Rubens, Reynolds, Stubbs and Gainsborough) with a personal appreciation of all its qualities. He also provides a first-hand description of the many changes that have occurred in recent years. With splendid photography, some of it from Althorp's archives and some of it specially commissioned, this new book offers the perfect guide to one of England's greatest houses.

This account of Althorp, his family seat, by Charles, the ninth earl Spencer, only scratches the surface of its 500-year history. Nevertheless, whether he is describing the sleepless nights of his childhood, the ticking of clocks "always ... too subtle a sound, getting absorbed in the oak of the floorboards and the fabric of the tapestries," or appraising the forbidding character of his grandfather, the "Curator Earl," Spencer casts a candid, evocative light on his subject.

Indeed, Spencer's own efforts on the estate have been considerable. First comes the business of repairing the predations of his "short-termist stepmother," Raine, the countess of Dartmouth, who has laid down wall-to-wall oatmeal carpet in a 115-foot-long Tudor picture gallery. Now comes the death and burial on the estate of his sister, Diana, the princess of Wales. That Charles must now curate the family home as a site of global mourning is a trial quite the equal of anything the estate has ever faced.

Subtitled "The Story of an English House," the book has a structure, dividing the subject into buildings, grounds, family history, and collections, that is entirely conventional. Yet Spencer surprises by packing in many details about the social and political vicissitudes that shaped his family's wealth and taste. In doing so, he eschews his grandfather's regrettable elitism, while losing none of the old man's dedication to the family's heritage. Like all good introductions, this book suggests a world and time far exceeding its little compass. --Simon Ings

About the Author
Charles, Viscount Althorp, became the ninth Earl Spencer on the death of his father in 1992. Since then he has undertaken extensive refurbishment of Althorp and supervised the changes made to accommodate the many thousands of people who wish to visit the home and grounds since the death of his sister. He was educated at Eton College and obtained his degree in Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Beware, Kindle Edition has no photographs

Enjoyed Charles Spencer's history of his family and their ancestral home Althorp but was very disappointed that there were no accompanying photographs as was in the print edition. Only giving this two stars as I feel rather cheated as in many places the narrative assumes the reader is also referencing photographs of the rooms or works of art being discussed. Without any accompanying photographs, this Kindle Edition of the book is disappointing.

Having been a huge admirer of Diana, Princess if Wales, I jumped at the chance to read this book. I was not disappointed! It was a most interesting history of Althorp and of the Spencers through the years. Anyone who is interested in English history and English historic houses this is a must read. And not just because it was Diana's ancestral home. I highly recommend Althorp: The Story of an English House!!

A quick look at English aristocracy and the estates that are passed down through generations. Upkeep increases as revenue declines, and we see works of art sold at auction, often way below their true value. A sad state of affairs, but there are many who struggle to preserve this history. Diana's resting place is here.

About the Author
Nihal Kularatna is the author of Power Electronics Design Handbook. He is an electronics engineer with over 30 years of experience in professional and research environments. He is a Fellow of the IEE (London), a Senior Member of IEEE (USA) and an honors graduate from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Presently, he is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Engineering, the University of Waikato, New Zealand. He worked at the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) in Sri Lanka as a Research and Development Engineer until 1990 when he reached Principal Researcher Engineer status. He was then appointed as CEO of ACCIMT in 2000. From 2002 to 2005 he was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Auckland. He is currently active in research in transient propagation and power conditioning area in power electronics, embedded processing applications for power electronics, and smart sensor systems. He has authored five books and is currently working on his sixth. His hobby is gardening cacti and succulents.

Should have taken one reviewer's advise and not spent money on this book.

I always read reviews on Amazon about items I want to buy - I usually actually will not buy anything that has a lot of neg. input on the product - The Title of this book SOLD me. In truth , this is like a very mini size table book or bathroom book that as a diver, would not keep your attention to actually read the whole thing. Save your money and don't buy this one !!!! The pics are not even good in the book.

I ordered $200 worth of coffee table books from Amazon, and this one was my least favorite. I regret buying this book. I thought that it was going to be a large coffee table book, but ended up being very, very small. Not sure what to do with it. I feel like I wasted $16 or however much money I spent on it. Not happy, thinking about returning it.

Best Gift to a Diver Brother

My brother in law recently obtained his scuba license and he is excited to dive. He isn't much of a reader, so he loved all of the pictures in this book. He can't wait to start checking off places he has actually been! I like the thickness and size of this book, perfect for a coffee table piece.

A Narrative of an Episode in Nicaragua History

Book Review: Adios Muchachos ( In Spanish) Author: Sergio Ramirez
The Author: Sergio Ramirez is re-known nicaraguan writer, a lawyer, and former member of the sandinista governing Junta throughout the eighties, then vice-president and more recently, chairman of the Sandinista political party. As a novelist he is known as author of several novels, his mosr recent is "Margarita Esta Linda La Mar" (1996), essayist and short story writer.
More than one country in Latina America had a writer for president. Costa Rica, Peru and Cuba (Marti), are only a few to name. Sergio managed to stay at the highest ranking governing circles for almost two decades from 1979 until his resignation in 1999 from his seat as Chairman of the Sandinista powerful political party. This was 3 years after his defeat running for his second term as vice-president candidate in 1996.
This book reveals a credible account from a true insider of the preamble to the war, the glory of victory, and the un-expected political struggle that the Sandinistas went through to stay in power and ultimately lose it. Because the free elections took place in a country that had been for ten years fighting a Contra War which depleted the national budget making it almost impossible to rule.
In his narrative, the protagonists come and go ( or die) like characters in a play. Some manage to come back "with a different costume" like a in giant theater, and history becomes a play with episodes. As Sergio relates, "I am glad I was not born before or after this chapter of history, because I would have missed it". Asked if he has any regrets, Sergio answers: "We did what it was right back then, what happened later we had few idea, how it would be "
Apparently, after reading the Epilog it seems that the true protagonist (if any other than the revolution itself) is Idania ( who was my sister) symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and heroism that made this chapter of the nicaraguan history possible. Her martyrdom symbolizes the crushing of a dream. I was particularly moved by this. Idania, Araceli and Dora Maria were for the nicaraguan revolution what Haydee Santamaria and Celia Sanchez were for its cuban counterpart.
Sergio concludes his story with an interview with Claudia, the daughter that Idania had left in care of her parents ( and mine) when death came by surprise ( and to her 5 comrades) as member of the Sandinista Commando that was actually running the war in the Western Front in April 1979. The interview takes place in a Deli shop in Arlington, Virginia, an area of town where lobbyists, journalists and essayists meet for lunch and discuss policies and legislation. As she waves good bye before boarding the subway train, the scene symbolizes the return to normal lives of the protagonists of this Episode in the nicaraguan history. Apparently as if nothing has happened in last 20 years. Or has it? Is there a legacy or rewards? Sergio says there is...

The Mistakes of Nicaragua, Retold.

The life of Sergio Ramirez has been an effort to bring about logical, intelligent change to the Central American isthmus and to develop his narrative along revolutionary lines. This book is a prime example of the importance of Sergio as one of the most essential and overlooked authors in Latin American literature. His ability to bring alive the dreams, plights, success and defeat of the Nicaraguan revolution, more than 10 years their electoral downfall, shows how politics and human sensitivity are intertwined in Latin America. His account of the Sandinista revolution is excellent because from its start, he was a player, and although he did not fall within the dogmas of some of his contemporaries, he is not without fault. At its core, his account continues that old school adage "Don't mess with Uncle Sam".

About the Author
Jacqueline Murray Brux received her Ph.D. in Economics in 1983 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. A respected economic professional, Dr. Brux's area of expertise is the economic development of developing countries. Her research encompasses the area of economic development, with special focus on women in development and the effects of structural reforms. Dr. Brux's international experiences include work and research in the countries of Burkina Faso and Ghana in West Africa; Mexico, Chile, and Cuba in Latin America; Russia; and Vietnam.

Janna L. Cowen received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 1979; she has been at UW-River Falls ever since. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of government regulation of business and labor economics. She was the 1987 Teacher of the Year at UW-RF and the 1988 Outstanding Teacher in the Social Sciences.

Excellent reference (if you need a reference book)

This a a reference A to Z book on world food, but still overweighted on French cuisine. The earlier editions had even more of a French focus and I would imagine that future editions will be even more balanced. I find this edition superior to the 1961 edition Larousse Gastronomique Encyclopedia of F 1961 Ed, which was 95% focused on French food. The current editions contain fewer receipes than the 1961 edition, but you don't buy this book for recipes. You buy it for A to Z entries. I can recommend this book for French cuisine (more modern coverage) and other cuisines (no competition with previous editions but still not great). Off course, this book is a bit like the winner writing history. The book contains some historical sections and they are not very good because they do not go back to original sources. So if Careme considered a dish French it is likely that Larousse will say so too - even if a more detailed analysis would find strong Italian roots. Still, I don't imagine people would buy this book to get historical information.

An alternative is Davidson's The Oxford Companion to Food 2nd Ed. That book is more quirky since it is the work of one person. Both are good, but I would consider the current book as a better general reference.

Update 2010: Having given two positive recommendations I must ask myself how much I consult these two books. The answer is 'not very much'. If I want to know something, I do a google-search or I look it up in a more specialised cookbook. So if you already own several books about food, you probably do not really need this reference book.

I had written a review of the 1961 edition as well, but I think it has disappeared. Some reviewers praise that edition. I do not agree. Even French food develops and a book written 50 years ago is just not up to date. Still, that edition is very interesting if you are a foodie and really like to see how things have developed. In a way I find it more fun to browse the 1961 edition than then brand new edition. Still, if you need a reference book, there is no doubt that you should buy the new edition.

The Bible of French food and cooking

In essence, this volume is an attempt to define French cuisine, French gastronomy, French cooking, and French food. Yes, now you can find the molecular gastronomy influence (look up nitrogen, liquid in this encyclopedia), and you can find ingredients sneaking in from each corner of the Earth, Pacific Island taro, South American tanko beans, and New Zealand spinach. Mole Poblano shows up and there's a turkey mole recipe. French cooking is not just the old cordon bleu, but the vocabulary of that sort of cooking, seasonal and fresh, elaborate preparations of few ingredients is the basis for this. The exquisite souffle section confirms that. Or turn to the basic cooking process/item of panada: seven recipes for the basic repertoire.

Each edition of the book has gotten larger, covering still "French" cooking but it's that subject which is getting larger. Larousse discusses the rodent, informing us that in 1870 Paris (under seige) rats were sold for 10-15 sous, and it discusses wine production in the United States. There's something for everyone who is interested in food.

Since the book is expensive, it's worth noting that most anyone who wants to save some money could sensibly consider the recent editions from 2001 or 2005, and if one is interested in the classic form of French cooking then the 1961 (first English translation) is also worth considering. Just don't complain about the use of butter or lard in the recipes.

A Kitchen Must Have

Oh what fun it is to peruse through Larousse Gastronomique. I bought it for my French boyfriend as his was very outdated and falling apart. Being a chef, he has always referred to this culinary gem and I can see why. His old version is in French and I was never able to quite understand the details. Now, I see the light. This latest version has many color pictures and added recipes. My complaint is the quality of paper. A bit too thin. And also, enough of the celebrity chefs. Dear God.

A surprising little book that gets it right about Market Research

One of the best books on Market Research out there. I teach a class on consumer Insights and am primarily a practioner. I was looking for a book that would guide my students on the kind of "thinking" required when doing research and was also a realistic description of how research works in practice.. Most of the other books are big and thick and highly technical. This small book succeeded in both capturing on a high level what doing research and doing it right is all about and at the same time it provides nuance into what to look for given how people actually behave. The book approache research as Story-Telling and explains how to get to the kinds of insights that can fuel actual client strategies. As a social Psychologist market research Practioner Anne Beall is particularly attuned to how to read body language when interviewing, yet that is just one of many things this surprising little book provides to practioners and those studying the field alike.

A great place to start!

I picked up this book at the recommendation of a professor - it's a great place to start for anyone who thinks they might be interested in market research but doesn't really know what it is. The book is short, clear and stays on topic, covering big ideas in a very digestible way for people who want an initial exposure to the field without being overwhelmed. As a first-time student of market research, I was particularly pleased to find a table in the book that paired different market research tools with different scenarios. This book would probably be too simple for someone with extensive market research experience, but for a beginning student, I think it's ideal. It would also be great for a business owner who is thinking of buying market research for their business but doesn't know how to get started.

This is a great little book about market research

This is a great little book about market research. I have used some of the information in this book to conduct trainings and in research classes. It provides a concise summary of types of projects (quantitative and qualitative), different data collection strategies and it reflects the real-world challenges and experiences of a seasoned researcher. It is a quick read, so not a comprehensive handbook, but definitely fulfills the title -- it is a guide. I think it is useful for newcomers to the field as well as experienced professionals and definitely recommend it.

Unbearable

This book reads like non-sense. I have to read and re-read to even figure out what the author is trying to say. Only to find out that the same idea is repeated throughout the next four pages. Also, the Kindle version does not have page numbers, which makes reading assignments difficult to find. The Kindle version search feature is nice. Wish it had x-ray though.

I only purchased this book because I HAD to for school. Personally, I don't think they should require nursing theory in grad school. Book was a snooze, besides you can get nursing theories online now.

Barely read this book since my instructor used power points that were obviously directly from the book. It is, however, a great reference for what you possibly cannot find.
